Found this on the Marine and Coastguard Agency site. I merely hope that at this age I'm capable of getting myself into the mess in the first place!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

WILD FOWLER RESCUED FROM MUD AT MALDON

An 82 year old gentleman was rescued this morning from the mud at 8:23 a.m. whilst he was out wild fowling.

A member of the public was out walking their dog when they spotted someone stuck in the mud they raised the alarm with the emergency services.

Thames Coastguard sent the Coastguard Rescue team from Bradwell to the scene and scrambled a Rescue helicopter from RAF Wattisham and the Essex Fire Brigade Service to attend. Also in attendance were the Police and their helicopter and the Ambulance Service with their air ambulance.

Richard Townshend, Bradwell Sector Manager, H.M. Coastguard, says:

“The casualty Squadron Leader Mike Townsend who is an experienced Wild Fowler for over forty years was out in his gun punt, (a flat bottomed canoe like structure pointed both ends with a ten foot long gun inside) when he got into difficulty; as a result of the excessive recent high tides the mud was liquefied due to pumping from the nearby flooded boat lake. The casualty had got stuck in the mud up against the punt. If it had not been for the member of public walking their dog, the casualty may not have been spotted as he was hidden by a bank and could not be seen from the mainland promenade.

Two Coastguards managed to remove the punt and then dig him out. The casualty was then airlifted 100 metres to shore where he was checked by paramedics.”

Casualty, Squadron Leader Mike Townsend, says:

“I praise the Emergency Services who came to my assistance; they were extremely efficient in such difficult circumstances.”

Good luck to him. No doubt there will be complaints about the cost of rescue services, but I reckon thats a better use of resources than retrieving Lilo users in the summer.
I do find it a bit of a concern though, that octogenarians are skulking about the Blackwater with 10 foot punt guns in the dark!

Saw it on local news last night... Looks a good omen for the Maldon Mud Race on Boxing Day!!! The chopper crew had to be winched out as well. The old boy walked down the bank and refused hospitalisation.

Good for him. Anyone can come unstuck (perhaps not the best choice of expression under the circumstances /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif )

Been there, done that when the engine on a tender died in an F7. Most embarassing, especially as it was in full view of the clubhouse! /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif It was only the second time in my life I've been on a helicopter.

Three helicopters does rather suggest a quiet day. Obviously Mr Plod & the Air ambulance had nothing better to do.

Doing the race next week. Anyone think of a good excuse to back out..... /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

where can I get one of these 10 foot blunderbusses from?
I could think of several occasions when it would have been handy /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Just saw this on the local news. Sqdn Ldr 'Wrong Way' Townsend is well known on the Blackwater, partly for sailing a mini Thames barge, partly for having come close to inadvertently shooting a member of the aristocracy... Also once managed to implant a 'family crest' from the rear end of his punt gun on my father in law's cheek as it recoiled!

A 10 foot gun to shoot down an itty bitty duck seems a bit unfair! Bet he didn't have one that big when he was shooting at 109's and Heinkels! /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif
