WILD FOWLER RESCUED FROM MUD AT MALDON
An 82 year old gentleman was rescued this morning from the mud at 8:23 a.m. whilst he was out wild fowling.
A member of the public was out walking their dog when they spotted someone stuck in the mud they raised the alarm with the emergency services.
Thames Coastguard sent the Coastguard Rescue team from Bradwell to the scene and scrambled a Rescue helicopter from RAF Wattisham and the Essex Fire Brigade Service to attend. Also in attendance were the Police and their helicopter and the Ambulance Service with their air ambulance.
Richard Townshend, Bradwell Sector Manager, H.M. Coastguard, says:
“The casualty Squadron Leader Mike Townsend who is an experienced Wild Fowler for over forty years was out in his gun punt, (a flat bottomed canoe like structure pointed both ends with a ten foot long gun inside) when he got into difficulty; as a result of the excessive recent high tides the mud was liquefied due to pumping from the nearby flooded boat lake. The casualty had got stuck in the mud up against the punt. If it had not been for the member of public walking their dog, the casualty may not have been spotted as he was hidden by a bank and could not be seen from the mainland promenade.
Two Coastguards managed to remove the punt and then dig him out. The casualty was then airlifted 100 metres to shore where he was checked by paramedics.”
Casualty, Squadron Leader Mike Townsend, says:
“I praise the Emergency Services who came to my assistance; they were extremely efficient in such difficult circumstances.”
