At 4.30 this morning a fire broke out on board an 80ft yacht at anchor in Prickly bay Grenada. Despite the best efforts of the crew, Rescue 1 from Prickly Bay Marina and the Grenada coastguard it has proved impossible to put out the fire and the boat is currently burning to the waterline with explosions as the various cylinders cook off.

All the crew are off the boat and safe with no injuries being reported. They have already had offers of accomodation from locals and yotties.

That is one sad sight , someones pride and joy burnt and on the way to the bottom , glad they all got off ok.

We saw an American yacht catch fire in Bonaire it's a terrible thing to see because it developss quite slowly, smoke, small flames, larger and larger flames, the mast comes down and it burns to the waterline. The owners had a dog on board which was rescued but they were away diving. When they got back all they had was dive gear and towels, everything else gone - money, passports clothes etc. The cruisers had a whipround to get them clothes and food and to organise passports. We also saw one catch fire while racing in Antigua Sailing Week.

The yacht is believed to be the S/V "Uisge Beatha"

.

Yes it is Uisge Beatha or Water of Life AKA whisky. We sailed past her on our way ut of Prickly a day or two ago. I commented on the name and Belle liked the lines and the fact that it was a Jongert as she had sailed on one in her younger days.

But just to repeat all onboard are reported to be safe and uninjured.

Just found out my oppo Scotty the Yottie was onboard, got ashore in his budgies plus his passport. Will ask him what happened, if he can say, tomorrow.

Happy they all got off ok

The fire appears to have started behind an electrical panel. Attempts were made to put it out but smoke drove off the people involved. The remains of the yacht is to be towed out to sea and scuttled.

The partially melted hull filled with debris is slowly sinking in Prickly bay at the moment. I believe that an insurance adjustor is flying in today or tomorrow and after they have verified the details then the appropriately named salvage tug the Flying Buzzard will tow her out to sea and sink her.

Update

The Flying Buzzard did indeed arrive and lashed her along side to prevent her sinking. They plugged holes and cleared the hull of debris. The plan now is to tow her to Trinidad where she will be cut up for scrap. Recycling rather than making a new reef.

To this end the holes in the topsides have been patched with plywood and they are waiting for a weather window.
