Does anybody know where I can get a compact reasonably priced 75mm spanner to tighten a stern gland. Can only find on the web things at least 15 inches long and costing a fortune. I cant get an adjustable spanner with 75mm opening jaw into the space in the bilge surrounding the prop shaft.

get a "Chain Wrench" cost very little & has more versatility than a one size spanner

make two up with some flat stock, or get a local welder to make two up, and dont forget to make sure that one of the spanners will fit behind the other one, so the locknut can be unlocked.

I second the chain wrench as above - same as used for removing the oil filters. You can probably get from Halfords ,and can be used down to 1.5" dia or a/f.

Had the same problem years ago until I found out not all stiltsons have the same jaw end.
Some are round and chunky and do restrict access as you mentioned, I found a set on a local market with a flat end to the jaw, fits perfect!

Leeside Tools, a second-hand toolshop at Yapton, near Chichester, has a huge stock of secondhand spanners, metric and Imperial.

There's a good chance they will have what you need. I bought one there for my sterngland nut.

They also have Stillsons and chain wrenches. These will do the job but will also maul the nut.

Now there's interesting. I was planning on borrowing some Stillsons from FiL who has loads of that sort of thing but it seems wise to have a set of properly fitting spanners on board. I'd never really thought about how tight the things could be, was expecting to have to welly a Stilson a bit.
