6hp Mariner 2 stroke - cant get gear shifter yoke back in

Not sure if it's universal to call it a gear shifter yoke but the images show what I am referring to. The yoke won't fit back in, and therefore the little plastic clip (gear shift select lever) cannot clip onto it securely. What happened after I initially took the clip off that caused this misalignment ? I must be missing something. Any help is greatly appreciated.

No images. Probably because you are a new member ( only 3 posts to your name) although you have posted a picture before of a Yamaha 6

Can you ID the engine more precisely with year and serial number. Also indicate where the part you describe as "a gear shifter yoke" is located. Part of the shift linkage presumably ?

If no one here can help post your question on the Mercury / Mariner board of the iBoats and/or Marine Engine forums but ID your engine fully.

Still no picture. If the picture size is to many bytes or what ever, the forum wont allow it.
