Halfords Carrera Transit - £299 - reduced to £200

seems okay

Careful you'll raise some folks' blood pressures around here with all this two wheeled talk...

Enjoy

I do love having a bike when in harbour but a folder can never offer the ride and load carrying capacity of the "Vicar"

I love the basket in the front. People smile when they see it and every day I get other large men asking if they can have a go on the "Vicar"

I do take him on the boat with me but the saddle has to come off to fit it in the cabin and there is no room left at all.

Last summer we had just the one bike - a borrowed Brompton

We said we had to have two bikes this year - sharing one was tough.

Jill and I will be on the boat for quite a bit this summer and two full size bikes on a 22 footer is untenable.

I would have said this bike is better for a big bloke than the Brompton.

There are a couple of ropey bits on it - but if it lasts a couple of seasosn then it will be money well spent.

Boat bikes spend a lot of their time out in the rain.

Good plan !

We have two low cost folders bought from Halfords - both Raleigh branded but pretty sure the first one is made by the same supplier as some of the Dahon. Didn't want to spend a fortune as liable to end up as an artificial reef if dropped from the dinghy ;-)

Been fantastic on the Scottish islands - Eriskay for example a particular highlight of leisurely scenic cycling

Enjoy your new purchase

We need to buy a second one - that one can be a bit smaller - although Jill says this one seems fine and much better to ride than the Brompton

Need a bag to store it ? These are not padded but adequate .......

.

Are the bags worth having. I assume that you do not want to put the bike away wet.

Whne we have the bikes on the boat then they are below while we are sailing. When we have stopped we move them out into the cockpit or onto the foredeck for the night - when in marinas they are usually chained ashore somewhere.

The trouble is that if they are not in the bag then the bag is one more thing to store.

I am open to persuasion though

Looks a good little bike, I have just had a look on their website and it is showing at full price.

Was it an in-store offer or did it need a voucher code or something, or have I just missed out?

We have a couple of Mezzo D9's picked up second hand and they are great, Anodised aluminium frames and lots of gears, allowing you to get away from the Harbour / Marina / Anchorage and explore. Bikes on Boats defiantly a must. Go Dylan go.

My Halfords aluminium folder serves me well and I'm over 16st!

PS small mods help, like putting a self tapper in the saddle stem so you don't need to over tighten the clamp, 1 to support the weight and 2 to set the seat to the correct height without any thought.
Setting tyre pressures to max.

It was in the bargain section in the middle of the shop - shop soiled I assume

PS how many towns were there in the montage?

One of my early cruising ambitions was to have a boat that would carry a bike for the two of us. We got our first folders in '88 which fitted easily in the Sadler 29. In those days, we got funny looks as we cycled around and the occasional quip about the Tour de France; now we see folders everywhere. The only place we doesn't bother to take them is the West Country, since cycling around Cornish lanes doesn't appeal to me.

It's nice to see that others have caught up with us. My advice is to look after them carefully and give them a good wash and lubrication at least annually, or the salt water environment will get to them.

We have two folding bikes which are a snug fit in our lazarette. The bags aren't padded but offer some protection against damage while in storage.
I agree I wouldn't want to put the bikes away if wet. The bag I mentioned came in its own intergral bag- I am unlikely to fold it back in . I thought the bag from Rutland Cycling good value - the bags in Halfords were far more money.
