Or it's possibly the eye of the storm?

Yes you could well be right, it makes interesting viewing now as the wind speed change happened exactly when pressure started rising and the wind veered, the centre must have tracked over south Cornwall.

..and then the anemometer self-destructed by the looks of it; see here:

Nasty while it lasted, but sudden drop oin wind is quite common as a front passes through. Note all the readings show a sudden dramatic change at the same time as the wind speed dropped, Barometer started rising rapidly, wind direction started a 45 degree veer - all the signs of a vigorous front passing through.

Noticed a reading of 54kts at Hurst Castle, W Solent around lunchtime too.

63 knots in the Solent yesterday.

Went down to check my lines. I almost got airborne in Yarmouth. Probably would have landed near Newtown.

Haha, there was I looking at the weather app and thinking the boat is jumping around quite a lot for a 5 gusting 6 ( in harbour).
Sometimes i am very glad that I smacked a rivet through the cable from the windthingy up the mast. One day I will repair it...maybe

I really wish I understood this stuff better..... it's realy interesting. I did get shown some things on a barograph once and it's amazing what they can tell you if you know what to look for.
