I'm in the wrong job!

The Committee of Employer Signatories to the Offshore Diving Industry Agreement have just agreed to give the divers and support crew working in the North Sea the following:

A 25 per cent increase in all rates of pay 1st November, 2006.

A further increase of 5 per cent on the new pay rates from 1st April 2007.

An increase of 5 per cent or Retail Price Increase (RPI) + 1.5 per cent, whichever is the greater, 1st November, 2007.

An increase of 5 per cent or RPI + 1.5 per cent, whichever is the greater, 1st November, 2008.

"Effectively, it means that in two years divers and support teams will be earning 44.70 per cent more than they are today," said the statement.

In addition, the signatories to the ODIA have agreed to pay all eight Bank Holidays at 100 per cent of the day rate.

I wonder if "support crew" includes the regular crew on the ship? Hang on, don't bother to answer that one!!!

If I was as crazy as those lads are reputed to be then yes I would, however I'm much more sensible, I went to sea as a deck officer... /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

It's bit late to pick up on this one I know, I'm out of the business now but still keep in touch with some of the blokes. I got a mail from one, just before he went into "sat" from the rig. That is, saturation under presssure for 21 days in a tin in the North Sea. He was chuffed about the pay increase and said the union were now going for improved conditions.

This is a bit of my response..."Big pay rise...yeah * right. You watch, they'll have the Polish and Rumanians doing your job over the phone from * Delhi by March, that'l * em"

By the way...you got the pay...now the conditionds..."Well, we'd like it a bit warmer and nat soo doork all the time doown there yah nar...why' eih, and we want to smerk tabs in whar 'abitat...only until it's banned in public next year thar ya nar...fairs, fair"

"Good on you though, seriously. Have they noticed that you keep your eyes shut yet?"

He's from the North East BTW...

Ex Royal Marines. Did lot's of stuff on sh!t pay and deserve all they get these days. It takes a lot of bottle to do that.

A very good friend of mine was a former sat. diver. He was, after retirement, a serious yachtsman and contributed a lot to these boards. He was a walking catalogue of ill health and died of a stroke two years ago, at no great age.

No, I would not do it.

Yer right, croak... I wouldn't again either...but still have big respect for those that do. It's a safer job now than in the 70's /80's though, or even air diving these days. One decent and one accent over a week, 'ish, in sat, is better than bounce diving on air or gas. Sorry, this is devoted to all the DSV skippers to keep the thread above the water./forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
