4 stroke outboard stored upside down

Stand up right and allow as much as possible to drain back down.
Plugs out and pull over numerous times to expell all the oil from the cylinder.

Clean plug

Clean the carb if much has got in there.

Top up to the correct level

If you have had it running then you should have got rid of all the oil in the cylinder already.

Hope that in starting it without getting rid of the oil in the cylinder first that you have not done any mechanical damage

Your outboard won't start easily mate, especially if it is Fuel Injection type (not carb).

What you need is one of those "Easy Start" sprays and you should spray the plugs, and also inside the cylinder with it.

Also, remove the air intake and spray from there.

When starting, lift the Fast Idle and put it at max, pump the fuel, and start (assuming it is a electric start).

Good luck!

Is a 2.5 hp outboard going to be fuel injected .....?

Is a 2.5 hp outboard going to have electric starting ....?

No to both I would think!

sorry did not read that part...!

Well in that case, just keep pulling the rope! if after 30 times it did not start, then probably a new plug will solve your problem!

Take the plugs out, squirt a little WD40 into the bore, this will dilute any contamination within the bore and allow it to come out when you pull the engine over.
Check for oil contamination in the carb, *if there is a crankcase breather then you will probably have oil in the air intake of the carb, simply squirt with carb&choke cleaner then CHECK your oil level, if it has been turned upside down and ran into the bore then your level is likely to be low!!
Clean your spark plug then give it a whirl, let it burn the smoke off and it'll run fine!!

Pretty much what VicS has said!!

*I say if because I have seen a four stroke engine recently that had no breather on the crankcase and as the engine wore it kept popping the oil filler cap off :)

On no account use Easystart! With oil in the cyklinder you will already have a raised compression ratio (reduced swept volume and probably nil combustion volume). As stated leave it upright for a matter of hours and then turn over with the plug out. Top up the oil level and there's every hope it will start and soon settle to normal, having burnt off some excess oil.

Last season my 2.5 4stk yam turned turtle while on a bracket fixed to the pushpit.
was that way for a while before I noticed it.
It did start but was very smokey for a few minutes then cleared, I topped up oil level, no probs since.

When the outboard is inverted or left laying on the wrong side the oil actually runs into the rocker cover and finds its way through the carb via the crank breather (which is connected between the rocker cover and carb air intake housing) and into the cyl through an open inlet valve, it doesent usually get into the carb float chamber as this is not connected to the crank breather system in any way.
It should not be a problem if you do as already stated, leaving standing for a while, clean plug, check/top up engine oil level, and start. it will be very smokey until it burns the stray oil in the combustion chamber, will then clear and run fine, though I would suggest cleaning the plug again after all oil is burned off.
