Looking for an aux for my boat, when it's not in use il be laying it down in a locker under a seat, my friend has a yam 4hp 4 stroke for sale but I'm worried if I lay it down the engine oil may cause issues, leak or make its way past the rings and fill the bores. Anyone know if it's alright? I guess if I lay it down prop up and bore at the high point then it won't fill the bores.

Have a look at the aluminium casing just below thw plastic engine cover, there should be a protrusion which contacts the ground when engine laid over, this will show which way around to lay it.hence ok to lay on its side.

usually they have a sign saying this side up. Not an expert but as far as I understand the air filter/air intake side needs to be upwards. Then its fine.

As Rob says you can lie it down on one side, I had a 2.5hp Yamaha 4 stroke and it had a rubber mount sticking out of one side so you could lie it flat onto this rubber mount, I used to lie mine flat in a locker when not in use and never has an issue

The owners manual will tell you in what attitudes they can be laid down.
You will find owners manuals on the Yamaha website http://www.yamahaoutboards.com/owner-resources/owners-manuals

In fact on its tiller or port side.
