We have an approx 25 year old 3GM30F. friend is re engining - he has a 3GM30, same vintage. wondering about e.g. oil, fuel pumps etc? injectors? fuel system? more differences than similarities or not? should i wait until a 3GM30F comes up?

(he is keeping his gearbox.)

(until relatively recently i usually would get a spare scrap car the same as my current car and plunder it for bits, made for very cheap motoring.)

TIA

I don't know for certain. But my understanding is that the only difference between the xGMxx and corresponding xGMxxF engines is the freshwater circuit and associated parts. I would assume that stuff like the oil and fuel pumps is the same. But if you want to double-check, just find the spares list for each and see if the part numbers differ.

Belts are different because the 'F' has a third pulley to go round.
But everything else should be the same. Certainly things like injectors.
My previous boat had a 3GM which was converted by French Marine in to a 3GM30F, with the addition of genuine Yanmar parts. It did make sourcing things like a new belt a total pain though.

I had to rebuild the raw water pump once, some engines were EU assembled, other came direct from Japan, I think there is an 'E' at the end of the serial number for the EU assembled ones and this tells you which raw water pump it uses (I think one was Johnson and one was Jabsco, but can't remember for sure).

that's a useful post - thanks. that's an impressive conversion too... must have needed quite a few Yanmar parts? heat exchanger and so on.

I can't take any credit for it- previous owner had it done. Think it left me with a pretty bombproof engine, as it still had the anodes that the raw water version came with. Just made sourcing parts a bit of an exercise in trial and error!

https://j109.org/docs/Yanmar-3GM30-parts-catalog.pdf is v useful. thanks.

will look in more detail tonight, but about 50% crossover (roughly).

as he only wants £110 and a bottle of malt, it seems a no brainer. as long as i don't tell the wife :)
price is good
how many hours on either engine?
If you have a place to store it, get it, unless v.high hours and dodgy maintenance, you're more likely to only need the exhaust elbow that I'm not sure is interchangeable.
Did a full rebuilt on a 2GMF with 1k hours (on a mase generator running at 3k rpm throughout it's entire life) and shells, rings, etc were changed because we opened the thing up. Did they actually need changing, not at all sure!
if it wasn't that I was barking up the wrong tree and could have avoided the whole exercise and expense with a even better and more thorough check on the diesel input and lift pump I'd now have it with 1200h with stock everything (ok rebuilt the raw water pump that was really falling apart)
