36 ft Yacht in trouble today off PETERHEAD

36 foot Norwegian yacht "Anga" , crew of two, dis-masted 75 miles off Peterhead Force 7 and rigging fouled the screw rendering it useless:

Poor sods, bad luck to have lost mast and fouled prop, it looks as though that they are no immediate harm but as the CG says they're rightly pissed off and not a bit thrown about. The North Sea is bad enough with the boat in good nick let alone no mast and no engine.

Uneasy about " The nearest vessel to the co-ordinates given for the yacht was a fishing vessel but who was unable to assist as and they had a lot of fishing gear out at the time. "

I hope the decision was the coastguard saying it wasnt necessary rather than the fishing vessel refusing to haul nets and lose income.

North sea conditions today

I've been out here for the last fortnight (58 8 37N 1 43 46 E) and will vouch for it being evil weather for sailing. We,ve had 5-7m seas several times, but worst of all, the wind shifts have left two sets of this size mixing with a F6-8 surface wind.
I feel for the folks concerned. A horrible experience.
The bolt cutters you all have stashed away may prove useful some day. Oil the hinges.

The weather pattern of late (and still coming) is about 3 days between low pressure systems. Not good for windows to cross the North Sea up here in small craft. There's another nasty deep low developing off Newfoundland which will be here mid next week - possibly stronger than the last few. Reef early folks.

regards, Graeme

poor sailors

Based on comments from the sea side rescue posters they clearly should have fashioned a paddle out of the heads doors and paddled there way into port. Simply giving up and calling the rescue services unless the boat has descended to the bottom and you are in your life raft is poor seamanship.

I've been sitting north of Bergen for a fortnight waiting for a weather window to return to Shetland. Think I will be here another ten days at least. Better fed up in Norway than dismasted off Peterhead!

Poor buggers !!!
Looks like at least a night in Peterhead for them. Doesn't bear thinking about. I've had the misfortune to visit Peterhead several times and believe me, this is not a good situation to be in. Fortunately the Crosse and Blackwell factory is no more - those lassies were WILD !
Mind you, could have been worse - they could have been taken into The Broch (Fraserburgh).
