Need to replace 350W inverter. Do I need to pay extra for Sterling pure sine wave version or can I get away with quasi sine. Using it to power laptop or combined tv/dvd. Reading conflicting reports about best option with regards to tv.

I have always used modified sine - my tv/satelite/microwave have been fine. Anything with a transformer like your laptop charger like the waveform better! BTW always buy a bigger inverter than you need. Add up max load and go for at least 50% more as a lot of things like tv's use more current on start up and the inverter will last longer if it isn't straining itself - just like revving the nuts off a small engine! Oh, use good heavy cables too as voltage drop can cause lots of problems; not all manufacturers fit heavy enough cable. Good luck. Paul

If you buy a modified sine wave, you may later find it wont run something else you buy, better to go for pure sine wave now, rather than replace it later. I agree with the bigger is better comments.

I'm looking for exactly the same same think at the momnet. I use a modified invertor in the car to power a laptop, and that works fine.
I just tried it on the boat to run a LCD TV and set of remote speakers, and got a horrible buzzing through the speakers. If I just wanted to run the TV seemed to work fine.
It seems the invertor is affecting the amp in the speakers, so am now looking for a pure sine wave version (apparently you don't get the buzzing...)

Given a choice I'd go for pure everytime, as there is always the next piece of equipment that maybe more sensative.

Also even when an item appears to work on modified sine wave, it maybe stressing it more than normal, power supplied can often run hotter than normal etc.

Have just fitted a Sterling quasi sine 350w inverter to run a flat screen tv and it works perfect and is very quiet, the old one was very noisy
