A guy came into the boatyard on the Dart where I was working on my boat this afternoon and said he'd just come from the yard at Queen Anns Battery and 34 yachts had blown over. Apparently they were in cradles and couldn't cope with the strength of wind and all went over within 10 mins. Not domino effect tho. Sounds horrendous, sympathy to the people who's yachts are involved. Does anyone know any more.

Sympathy for those affected.

I was there just yesterday afternoon..... what a weird feeling now, yesterday all OK and now this. The ones in the marina were taking quite a battering, but would never have imagined this happening.

Definitely sympathise with anyone affected.

That's just dreadful, and very sad to think that they'd have weathered it so much better in their natural element.

Were they laid up beam to this particular wind?

Little Knot

Not really beam-to, but not bow/stern to either, if you get my drift.

I commented on how few were on the hard compared to when I have been there before.... thank goodness I think.

The Met Office data for Plymouth at 0500 hrs gave a max gust of 90mph. This was in winds of 'only' 37mph from WSW.

On the news the Tamar bridge chap reckoned the peak gusts at the bridge were up to 130mph - bl00dy hell! It caused the bridge to be completely closed (not done so before) and the Torpoint ferries to be cancelled, after being hit by a yacht. I hadn't realised until watching the news tonight quite how bad it had been overnight.

Yes it was very bouncy here, also about 1 metre storm surge at high water. QAB has allways been prone to wind damage on the hard as it is wide open. Mountbatten suffers the swell but is behind a hill for SW winds.
Ballast pound lost a few boats, but Millbrook was ok but for a few draggins up the beach (why is it the same boats every year).

Polruan is not that far to the west look what happened to the anemometer at about 0220hrs.

Don't know what wind speed was achieved, but that looks like a 6mb pressure change in about 10 minutes!

We had gusts of 85 mph at The Needles. The boat is still in the water in Cowes and being blown onto the pontoon but seems to be OK. She is due to come out tomorrow but I might delay it........

On sunday we went for lunch at the Ship Inn in Porthleven, impreesive breakers as far as the eye could see. After lunch we walked from Sennen to Land's End along the cliif top. Probably F9 qith spray going over the Longships Lighthouse.
