300hp from 3.6 litres and a weight of 300lbs for a diesel sounds like quite a "game changer"

I had a quick look at petrol outboards and the Yamaha 300hp outboard weighs in at 571lbs and the 300hp Mercury Verado comes in at 635lbs.

Looks like you will have to wait until 2016 fro them to be available.
 
I guess a lot folk would chose diesel to improve economy. I am not sure a 300hp 2 stoke diesel is going to be any more economical than a same size petrol outboard, may even be worse?? But obviously as the article states

....this engine is important to certain buyers!!!

Sorry to be negative but I will eat my car if this gets off the ground.

I you look at Cox website the mere structure of the company smells of a smash and grab raid.

Product will need to be Tier 3 emissions certified, the MOD insist that we need to go to war using environmentally friendly engines.

Military volume potential far too small to amortise production development and emissions certification, assuming this is feasible, I have strong doubts.

Americans will purchase an American product.

Blue sky stuff, and EP Barrus already have a product meeting the MOD requirement in the bag.

Ricardo are engine technology World leaders, however give them a big budget and they are also world class at spending it!

Good luck to some real decent engineers enjoying themselves, but will it be brought to market...........No
 
Here's the DIY answer: VW engine and four wheel drive gearbox on top of a big outboard leg......;)

Not sure if raising £10M from investors and getting the ex CEO of Cosworth Engineering to join Cox as their new CEO can be described as "smash and grab"

I looked at the CV's of board members a year ago and it smelled all wrong. Perhaps recruitment of ex CEO Cosworth Engineering was to address this, who knows.

What I do know is that somebody WILL get burned.

From the various descriptions available, it sound like a modern version of the heavy marine Dorman.
Technically interesting, but where's the market for such a complex piece of kit?
I understand the MOD's wish to dispense with shipboard gasoline in 2015, but I don't see how that engine is going to be sorted and in series production by then.
 
The military want a stealthy fast rib that will run on marine diesel, so they only have to transport one type of fuel. Traditionally this is an oxymoron with diesel. As LS says, Ricardo are world leaders in Diesel engine design and development, and are reassuringly expensive as a result. Again as LS States, this project is seriously underfunded. Companies like Ricardo, AVl, FEV can chew through £30 mil a year without much effort on an engine programme.

But apart from that Ricardo is far from the only one investigating the very-high-power-to-weight Opposed-Piston-Opposed-Cylinder diesel engine

Two more companies in the race, though they are targeting the truck market, which I suppose Ricardo could do too

Ecomotors are well financed and has struck some deals with manufacturers...... in China.
 
As Rafki commented blue sky stuff is easy, taking it to market costs zillions, none of these companies has the sheer muscle.

Nobody has even commented about the bottom end............

Serious example of the Emperor has no clothes.
