3 black marks. (I won\'t have\'em)

Bavarias
Bilge Keelers
Bloomin' in-mast furling.

These are the 3 things I've long said are the dark depths of modern yachting, kind of like Queen, U2 and RH Chilli Peppers in music really.
Coming in here I discover I am not alone in the Bav thing, and the other 2 are not so unusual either, but of course it's all horses etc.
Besides opinionated people, what could be considered perilous paths and poor choices in modern marine matters?
What're your 3 dark marks?
Jem.

Re: 3 black marks. (I won\'t have\'em)

Hehehe.
I especially like no 3, but mostly when ashore- they are super hazardous in Aberdeen when on a motorbike.

Re: 3 black marks. (I won\'t have\'em)

Sorry but I have a 1959 Seagull (OB) and it works like a dream, apart from the emissions, lack of power, noise, pollution, etc

Re: 3 black marks. (I won\'t have\'em)

1959?! Now that gets some points.
Now to hear if anyone's got a 47 year old Bavaria or in-mast furling system still going... And no, I don't care that they didn't exist then...
Me, biased? Surely not.

Re: 3 black marks. (I won\'t have\'em)

Are you sure about that? Maybe modern Dufours, but Bens, Jeunneau and Gibs have always seemed OK to me. (And Dufours are the only ones my family have owned of those!). I say Bavs though as I have worked and sailed on them- I've not liked them since a looong time before coming here or hearing anyone else's opinions.

I'd happily add most US brands though- especially Macgregor, but not excluding Hunter, Legend, Catalina and maybe IP.

Re: 3 black marks. (I won\'t have\'em)

I wouldnt rule out a Bavaria or a bilgekeeler but inmast furling worries me a lot.

Seagull shitters worry me less than bullshitters You know the bird variety are a pest but the human variety seem fine until the chips are down.

Re: 3 black marks. (I won\'t have\'em)

Intriguing, sh*tty seagulls on motorbikes in Aberdeen, well easy to see they could be a pest, just lucky they have not the brains down here to use motorbikes.

How do they manage at traffic lights with such short legs?? /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Don't underestimate the size of Aberdonian seagulls! Aint nothing small about them... And they've got a real mean streak.

Mind you, humans always worry me.

Re: 3 black marks. (I won\'t have\'em)

Not necessarily, not having the 3 worst things doesn't mean the rest is good.

Right now I'd almost consider a bilge keeled Bav with in-mast muck... but not quite.

Fender socks
Plastic fender attachment clip things
Fenders dangling over the stern while underway

I've got a Seagull 40+ on my garage wall, just in case I need to move the garage. Until then it's a superb motor. Quiet, odourless, smoke-free, maintenance free.
Just have to remember not to try and start it.

Re: 3 black marks. (I won\'t have\'em)

3 black marks (in order):

"Harbour Full" signs - especially when there's a bit of unused water still available
Motorboat wash over 2 feet high - and that includes Red Funnel
Sailing boat motoring when there is enough wind to sail - the boat always looks so sad.

Re: 3 black marks. (I won\'t have\'em)

1. Bavarias AND their owners
2. Ridiculously huge ensigns (e.g.: any Dutch boat)
3. Yachts motoring when there's enough wind to sail (mostly Dutch Bavarias)

Alas, the limit seems to be three.
Got enough gripes to warrant an edition of "Grumpy Old Men" of my own.
