mine is dead and beyond repair. can anyone recommend a cheaper alternative to the yanmar for which I have been quoted £350? Any helpful comments appreciated
Car wreckers, ,many Japanaese vehicles have the dual foot alternator.
I believe that Mazda and others too have dual foot alternators.
They will be internal and you may want tohave an external voltage regulator.
I purchased a Japanese dual foot rebuilt alternator for my Yanmar. It delivers a tested 70 amps and cost very little.
I had the alternator altered to allow external sensing, with a smart voltage regulaator for sailboat use.
BUT now I question the expense and complexity of the smart regultor. The internal voltage regulator is less complicated, inexpensivce as it's already installed, and according to the alternator shop which fixes police vehicles along with others, there is little to be gained unless you se the engine for a very short while and want to maximize that time with high amps.
With a wind generator and solar panels I belive that the internal would have been fine.
It cost me £14 for a 65amp unit from a volkswagen in the scrappy. If you can't get the same fitting, buy a narrower one and use spacers ~ they help to set perfect belt alighnment as well. Take the old one and it's bolts with you, the scrappy guys are pretty knowlegable. If you end up doubling the amperage, make sure everything else in the circuit can stand the pace!! (splitter diodes etc.)
