2GM20 musings

I had a 2GM 20 which gave excellent service until one spring when it started running rough and spewing clouds of smoke.
After throwing loads of money at it the final diagnosis was corroded exhaust port which meant a new head.
The cost of that plus all the ancillary bits like gaskets etc was more than half the cost of a new Beta. [plus several weeks loss of use].
No contest.

Crikey, did the exhaust port go due to the exhaust elbow falling apart?

Ha, and I have YET to receive a refund even though I sent it back on the 14th by recorded mail. hmmmm

Don't think so, the elbow was about 3 years old & looked in good nick. I had the head off and decoked, ground the valves etc. There seemed to be a lot of carbon in the exhaust port but the yard engineer later told me that it probably wasn't carbon but rust that I was removing!
Even such a simple job as a head overhaul [simple on a car or motorbike anyway], involved ridiculous effort to disconnect and slide the engine into the cabin, do the job and replace everything before testing.
The engineer sensibly said that I could easily spend another £2,000 on it and still have an elderly engine I wouldn't trust. From memory I think the head alone was best part of £1000.
