Hi, can anyone help, my out drives will not stay up for more than 2 hours, cannot find any signs of a leak, has anyone had a simular problem?

It'll be one of two things;-

Either the piston seals in the rams letting by [you can't buy a kit from Vilevo btw]
Or the valve seals in the pump letting by [ you can't buy them either]

So I am afraid its either new rams or new hydraulic pump [both about £400ish]

Your guess which to change first is as good as mine...

Course it could always be a tiny split in a hose like mine was..

Good Luck.

If you want the prop to remain fully out (up) for trailling or if you have grounding concerns at your mooring, you can get some rod clips (circa £20) that will do the job.

The rams can be refurbished by any decent hydraulic specialist.... i got four rams refurbished last season (new seals , rechroming etc) for about £30/ram. Getting them out can be quite difficult though.

If SP rams are the same as DP's you can get the gland nuts off with rams left in situ and take the rods to a specialist for refurbishment.
Might also be worth checking the cylinder bores aren't scored beforehand however (possible cause of your leak maybe?) Assuming pump/pipes ok, then if all else fails Coastal Rides do p/e recon units for reasonable money.

fwiw
On my 1993 290 dpa rams .....
after stripping out for access and with no other easy options we realised that the centre cylinders with a bit of effort just un-screw off the end hub section. Then sent them (x4) for re-con as above.

Thanks guys for the info, I pumped them up and down four or five times, some onesaid it could be air, the starboard outdrive has now stayed up for three days, but the port one still goes down, I took the cap off today to check the transmission oil and it came out creamy colour and I know the starboard is red, drained as much as I could with suction pump then refilled with red transmission fluid but she is going down again, about 20mm in ten minutes, will drain down again to see if I have removed all the cream, has anyone had this before? did they make a creamy coloured transmission fluid? oh Rafiki1 where would I get the clips from?
Regards Tony

If its cream coloured then the oil is contaminated with seawater which means your cylinders need an overhaul or replacing, you need to get the pump cleaned out before the salt damages it also.

As Spannerman says, you have water in the oil, so it is most likely the rams or just possibly the hoses. Make sure you thoroughly clean out all the old creamy oil as soon as possible and replace with new oil.

The cylinder rod and piston can be removed with the rams in situ. Disconnect rod end pivot and remove end cap. Take care when unscrewing the end cap because it is very soft metal. I made up a C-spanner with two pins. All seals are readily available from seal stockists but make sure the rod lip seals have stainless steel springs.

Examine the cylinder bore for damage (unlikely).
Note which way round the lip seals are fitted.

Good luck.
