290 leg problem

Hi

After some advice.

I have twin AQ151 petrols driving 290 legs. Both fully serviced this winter incl bellows, oil change etc. Run perfectly for about 2 hours then on the plane at 25knots 1 leg dropped out of gear. Stopped boat and then rengaged gear - would initially drive fwds at low revs but dropped out again on acceleration above tick over. Shortly afterwards would not engage at all. Have confirmed cable is fine and is moving gear lever on back of leg to correct position for fwd/reverse(a cold swim!), but gears are not actually engaging fwd or reverse (ie prop not turning).

Any ideas before I fork out for an engineer

Thanks

shaft inside leg broken. I think they have a shaft that breaks so gearbox doesnt. It has a cut out bit that weakens it, maybe that was too weak and broke under normal running pressure?

I think this is right can anyone confirm?

Not very well up on this Dom, so my only addition to your suggestion would be to check that the oil hasn't leaked out, or water got in (undo the screw on the top of the leg that acts as a dip stick and check for level / milkyness). Isn't the gear engagement a function of oil in the leg, i.e. pressure is used to engage the cup/cone clutch, and if there ain't no oil, then there ain't no pressure, and if there aint no pressure, then there ain't no engagement? Or am I talking crap as usual?

One of mine leaked right after a service - not the engineer's fault at all, it had some fishing line in the outer seal that had got its way in past the line cutter.

Nope, 290's dont need oil to engage, but excessive oil, ie overfilled may prevent the cone clutch from engagein properly.

Wasnt there a trhread about this a while ago. cue Brendan!

I had a very similar experience with a 290 leg a few years ago. Like you, I lost drive a few hours after an overhaul.

It was traced to water in the oil which caused the cone clutch to slip. A screw had been left loose somewhere under the cowl that covers the gear linkage on the aft side of the leg.

It was fixed by tightening the screw and then draining and replacing the oil several times to eiminate the water. This involved craning the boat out again.

Can you check the appearance of the oil without lifting your boat out? You should be able to see if it is contaminated by water as the oil will be milky.

Good luck,
Dave.

Re: 290 leg problem - solved

Well boat (Sealine 255) came out on its trailer and instantly could see problem - The inner part of propeller was turning driven by the shaft but the blades are static - leg working all along. So all down to prop failure (Not cheap but cheaper than a leg repair)

Thanks for everyones help

Re: 290 leg problem - solved

Is that by design do you think? Maybe the prop has built in sheer pins or something so if you hit a blade it will allow the centre to turn like that?

Is there any sign of damage on the prop?

Re: 290 leg problem - solved

Apparantly it will give if it hits something or the rubber between inside and outer parts eventually goes (the friction causes heat which degrades it?!!). Old prop has tine leadin edge ding so difficult to tell what the cause is. Happened in 25m of water in mid Solent
