Hi I am totaly new to boating and looking for advice. I have a berth booked at Northerny marina all I need now is a boat! At the London Boat show I was very suprised to see a Glastron 27ft (279 i think) diesel cruiser for 50k. I have been told that a diesel engine is a must as I plan to use it at every opportunity. Out of all the 25-28ft cruisers this was the best value boat at the show. I am having a demo on the boat this weekend but would like to hear from any 279 owners.

They are right. If it's not diesel it's not worth having. Well not if you are going to go anywhere in it. Don helmet and wait for petrol head flack!! /forums/images/icons/laugh.gif

For that sort of money you can get one of these here. Take a closer look at the fit and finish of the Glastron and you can see where the cost savings are for the size.

As, they say, its a beast of an engine!! But 2gph definitely not, I would think nearer 10-15gph

Yes it is A GS279. I have been the proud owner of mine for a year now. After purchasing it in February last year I have had the most enjoyable season of boating so far with trips to France and the west country. The diesel engine is very economical to run making these kind of trips easy on the wallet! They now offer the boat with an upgraded interior. Currently negotiating a cost to have it fitted to my boat. Would definitely recomend it to anyone I would also imagine with the current dollar exchange rates this would be a good time to buy.

Thanks for your reply!
Can you give me the top speed with the KAD32 they have told me 31 knots. And is it worth having the radar arch?

When I first took delivery we reached 30 knots but now with all our personal items and extra equipment we get 28 knots and have respectable cruising speed of 25 konts. Yes go for the radar arch we have fitted our TV and VHF aerials to it.

a degree of self interest as I m also at northney and dont want to have to rescue you !, you need a bit more than just a boat if you are totally new to boating. Like some training! Id also just check delivery times. on another type of boat, I was estimated late august . Just check you dont miss the whole season. Id also mention that the cost of the boat is not quite as relevant as it first might seem, but its the cost of the boat against the sale price of the boat that counts. thats why second hand can be interesting. I havent looked ,but essexboatyards sometimes have some dealer ex-stock at silly prices. otherwise, I ll meet you down there in the sun soon i hope.

They have given me a RYA ICC course. Went to essexboat yards but felt like I was dealing with used car salesman. Look forward to seeing you at Northerny.

You'll come around to common sense eventually. After all, given all the grief you've given bow thruster users over the years, yesterday you posted about how essential they are! /forums/images/icons/laugh.gif

At Northney is On Board. I've not used them myself but they were recommended.

I'm based at Northney too - see you there sometime ;)

I used to own a 249 Glastron. My family enjoyed what was a very affordable family cruiser. We had the smaller AD31 engine but still moved the boat along at a good cruising speed. The layout was supperb the only down side was the small aft cabin but the boat was only 24ft. Handeld well in a sometimes lively sea. We have now traded up to a larger boat after gaining some sea miles! Go for it!!

My garden tractor runs off petrol. Does about two miles to the gallon I think. But no matter, I can walk down to the bottom of field to fill it up.

Not so with boat.

Any way, your boat dont count,

it's out of the match box series...../forums/images/icons/laugh.gif

Is there a Glastron owners club? I have read about dearise angles and have found that the 279 has a 21 degree this seems alot higher than other American competitors. Is this true.

Yes it does have a deep dead rise angle and makes easy work of a head sea. You really need to try the boat on a good windy day to see the true potential. Even the wife will go out when the weather is less than ideal. Now thats got to be a selling point the salesman has not thought of!

Re: Someone telling porkies!

Not you terry or any poster here

BUT

<<2gph at 34 knotts (sic)>> yeah right more like 2 MPG

<<265.00 HP ....KAD44>> yeah right they are 260

<<Fuel .. 270 litres ......Range 400 >> er kilometres?

270 lit = 59.39287286 gals (approx) so 400 er miles equals nearly 7mpg - at what speed I wonder?
