Hi,

I would like to remove all the old antifoul/primer from my 26 footer (fin keel) then re-apply them during the sunny day.

-how many man days do it need to finish eveything?
-do I need any chemical to remove the old paint or just use the scraper?
- 1 coat or 2 coats for the primer?

Thanks!

Maybe not exactly relevant, but nonetheless may help....
- It took me 3/4 full days of scraping of my 19' b/k to take back 3 layers of antifoul back to basics.
- I didn't use any chemical, but I daresay there is one, just used a lot of elbow grease
- Primer, I put one coat as that is what it stated on the tin (XM). This took long enough - approx 4hrs to apply, and then 5-6hrs for the actual antifoul, but I used a brush and I'm sure there are faster ways I could have done it.

All in all, personally after mine, I would allow a week to do it if I had to do it again.
Hope this helps a little.

If you use a decent scraper, one with a carbon steel blade like a Sandvik, you should be able to get all of the antifouling off in a couple of days. Best to gently round the ends to avoid gouging the hull, Wear a decent mask, Hat, Goggles/Glasses, and tape up your sleeves! Westerly 33' f/k would take a w/end. HTH

After several years of antifoul build up I gave in and had the hull sandblasted. It cost £250 for 27' fin keel and produced a finish I could paint primer on to with just a washdown. Well worth the cost!

To paint the hull from waterline down usually takes me a couple of hours using a 7" roller for most and maybe a brush for the fiddly bits on the waterline. Masking up first etc adds 30 mins etc.

If you go this way you will need several priming coats - I managed 5 before I got fed up! Could have got away with fewer if used 2 part primer but as I was doing this overwinter it was too cold for 'high tech' paint!

Doing it all by hand is better than going to the gym!

Good Luck

I would go down the Sandblasting route (or maybe "slurryblasting"?). That is a lot of scraping! - espeically as you also want the epoxy off, may as well get it all taken off in one go.

My Antifouling techinique is to use Radiatior Rollers (easier to control and put pressure against when using at arms length as well as for "cutting in") and also a "cutting in" brush.

Also nowadays I use icecream containers to decant the Antifouling into (The small size of the Radiator Rollers fit in nicely). When finished they just go in the skip.
