I've got a 25hp Evinrude circa 1992 with electric start that's been sitting around for a few years. Would I need to connect a battery if I want to try and pull start it, or will it (potentially) run without the circuit being completed? Also, does anybody know what voltage/amps battery I need? Thanks very much!

It should start by hand alone. I can hand start (gulp) my 70hp Johnson if the battery is flat. The motor creates it's own ignition charge.

I'd be tempted to take the plugs out and spin it over a few times first to get some oil mist in the cylinders.

Don't forget to put the leg in a dustbin of water or use muffs.

Probably a good idea to whip the carb off and make sure it's all clean and ungunged too, to give yourself the best chance and the least effort.

Er spinning it over with the plugs out won't get any oil mist into the cylinders. It'll just suck fresh air in and out through the plug hole! Thats what you do if you flood an engine.

A little 2T oil into the cylinders via the plug holes will lubricate the piston and rings, but then spin it over a few times to spread it around and expel the excess and to avoid fouling the plugs, would not go amiss though.

You should point out that the bin of water is essential to avoid running the water pump dry and that "muffs" does not mean ear defenders (yep that's what I though you meant at first!) it means muffs to connect a water supply direct from a hose. (no idea though if they can be used with this engine or not)

Clean and regap the plugs if they are not permanent gap ones while they are out.

The suggestion to clean the carb(s) is not a bad one if you are happy doing that sort of thing but personally (and i am happy) i'd try it out first.

If you do want to use a battery to start it. (Not necessary) then it should be 12 volt and capable of 150 or so CCA. ie a small car battery will do fine. olewill
