Yes. Very well as far as i know (i've since sold it). But its a very very hard job as you have to make the engine bay longer so beware.

Use a 4 cyl and you will not need to move the fuel tank!

true - but then it would be underpowered unless he buys a D4, unlikely in a 2550.

Would probably need 2 of the Merc 1.7 TD's at 120 hp each. I have 2 in my 31 footer, and work well, for my mix of cruising.

Wouldn't get two in a 2550 so that's that then.

I have done this with a 2450. Not as wide or as long but I swapped a 5.0ltr v8 230hp for a 4cyl Volvo Kad32 170hp and can still make 30 knots.You will need a few more HP but if the engine bay is the same length, will not be able to fit a 6 cylinder. Yanmar used to make a 4 cylinder 240 hp motor which would probably do.
