24 volt water temp guage

I have a 1973 VDO water temp gauge playing up, all tests done it is certainly the gauge itself do I need to replace the sender when replacing the gauge? Is there anywhere to obtain old instruments? as I can see that a new sender wouldn't fit an old engine (sods law)
