24 Volt System - Battery Arrangement

I currently have 4 x 6V and 2 x 12V batteries wired in series for the domestic and engine start 24V power supply respectively.

Is it possible to replace these with individual 24V batteries? Would there be any disadvantages?

I am sure they must exist but in a quick look around a few battery websites I did not actaully find any! If they are difficult to source then that may be a disadvantage.

Do they workout cheaper or more expensive ... I dont know 'cos i couldn't find any :( If they are not so common they may be expensive

I guess that a 24 volt battery will be more compact than two 12 volt ones , but being in one lump will make it more difficult to site and to lift and carry!

All other things being equal I think the weight would put me off. It would be silly to buy one and then find you could not lift it onboard without lifting gear!

My boat has 12 and 24v equipment. Using 12v batteries you can change them round and if one goes down you can still make up a viable system.
Batteries in parallel are supposed to last longer as they don't cycle so deeply so I am quite happy with my series parallel arrangement.
A 24v battery would weigh a ton and probably cost a fortune due to their limited demand, that's also why I have not gone for 6v batteries.
 
An hour later and I still have not actually found any such a thing as a 24volt battery. 6 volt, 8 volt and 12 volts no problems.

I think I will retract my opening comment in the earlier post. getting close to believing that there really is no such thing !
 
24v battery

As said too heavy and you have advantage in more lower voltage batteries in that you can replace just one smaller battery if you have a bad cell. The only 24v batteries I have ever seen are for light aircraft. They would be too small and not have enough capacity for your job. And expensive. olewill
 
Thanks folks for your comments and in particular to VicS for searching for 24V. I must admit that a quick trawl through the obvious suppliers through up a blank as well for me.

When I come to change the domestic bank I'll go for 2 x 12V unless there is some specific capacity / amphour advantage having 4 x 6V batteries. The current arrangement takes up 2.5' x 2' space, which is quite large. The batteries also contribute to a list, so a future move is on the cards as well to redistribute weight.

Batteries

In practice it is all about weight. I had some 220 AH batteries a while back. They were only 6v batteries and weighed in at about 30Kg. Extremely difficult to lift or move in a tight space. But huge capacity deep cycle. Obviously for that capacity 12v would weigh 60kg and 24v would weigh 120kg. So you can only get them in 6v. Just check the weight before you order your batteries. good luck olewill

William_H this is exactly my problem, weight and the list that it contributes too. I'll check this out when I replace them. I didn't appreciate how much one 6V battery weighs.
