Hi all, theres a 24 volt inverter giving 500watts and having 2 plug sockets for sale in my local paper and I am wonderering if its worth a punt.
My mvf has a 24 volt system so it might be a handy bit of gear although its a large beast, I am not really sure if 500 watts is work having.

Regards Alan

Well, I can't see why you would want it at all if you don't know what you want to to use it for?

500W might be far greater than you actually need .... or more importantly could be nowhere near big enough.

As a price reference, 12v 500W (modified sine wave) inverters are under £20 on EBAY.

Hi Vic

forgot to say my boat needs lolads of work inside , I am talking sanders, drills, vacum cleaners etc etc

In that case, it's too small. Probably OK for a sander, but for drills, vacuums, etc you need at least 1000w continuous rating. Also the battery/recharging capacity to support it!

Sounds like a petrol or diesel generator might be a better way to go.

Not only is it too small, many power tools with electronic motor speed control don't like modified sine wave outputs which the cheap ones are..

A genny is probably a better bet if you can't get a shore supply.

genny is the way to go then......glad I asked..thank you

Yes but not any Generator. Modern cheap (Chinese) ones tend to generate DC which is switched to AC giving a square wave or modified wave form the same as an inverter. Look for a Gen with an alternator. Here the engine must run at 3000RPM (or 1500) to give 50 hertz and produce a true sine wave form. This will power all AC gear (provided power demand is not too much) ie fridge good luck olewill
