Mini Transat 1978

This time 2 years ago I did a delivery trip with Bob Salmon.. a Benteau 393 from Les Sables D'Olone to Lanzarotte.

Bob was still going strong dispite being well into his 70's highy profesional skipper and although quite a taciturn type once he had got a couple drinks under his belt good company with plenty of stories about various ventures such as the above.

Regards Nick

3 A22s completed the minitransat .I think 2 were sailed back and one did some damage on a reef within sight of the finish line sadly.

To meet the length restriction they had to cut a few inches off the bow above the waterline I thin k one is still like that now .

looking at the boats in the picture they dont bear much resemblance to the 16 knot skimming dishes they use these days but the modern boats wont still be in use as family cruisers 30 years later /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

All 3 of the transatlantic boats had 4" 'sawn off' the bow to fit in the race 6.5 metre rule.

'Anderson Affair' was returned to standard, but 'Anderson Adventure' & 'Spirit of Talardy' retain the race profile. All 3 also had small windows & masthead rig for the race.
