I'm going to sell my Albin Vega and buy something bigger, hopefully. anyone got any ideas for a liveaboard yacht that would suit?

I'm in Northern Ireland so west coast of Scotland, Dublin or Donegal is about as far as I'm willing to travel for it.

cheers!

can maybe go to 1-2k for repair, upgrade. not a lot I know!

don't really fancy a fixer upper.

sailing performance isn't a big deal.

would prefer comfort if anything.

sloop is also preferred but not essential.

I have looking at a moody but it is 35k :-(

You may be taking the wrong approach.
Why not research what is on the market locally ( try apollo duck regional listing) and particularly if something has been for sale for a while you may get quite a bargain, as I managed to do. I definitely would not be dismissing sailing performance as quickly as you have - the sailing performance of my bigger boat is a constant pleasure to me. I find now I do far less motoring or motor sailing than previously.
something that has been sailed regularly, wintered ashore, tidy down below, reasonably aged sails, standing rigging and engine and a good competent owner would be on my requirements. If the seller has invested in these pricey items you get the benefit without incurring the cost.
It is also very feasible to buy say on the Clyde and sail her home.
good luck.

Is this purely a liveaboard boat with weekend and summer holidays locally or liveaboard with the possibility of blue water cruising at some point?

Berths needed?

When I saw the thread title I thought 'I'll click and post that he should buy an Albin Vega and save £10k to enjoy it'.

I still feel that way :)

+1

We lived on a Vega for 8 years and took it around the outside and across the Med to Turkey; we'd still be sailing it now if Lesley hadn't insisted on something a bit bigger for the Trans-Atlantic. There are two Vegas in Mindelo at the moment, one heading for the Caribbean and the other to Brazil.

The Vega is great but I'd rather not sh!t beside my head in the long term, thanks! I'm a reasonably young single guy so I wouldn't mind being able to entertain...

It's mostly for living aboard but I'd like to go as far as Scotland in the summer.

That Moody is very tempting, especially with the recent engine and cockpit tent. The sort of boat I'm looking for but would like the corridor to the rear cabin as seen in the larger Moody's. I know that's a lot to ask for though!

I've been looking locally and on tinternet but thought some people on here would have better search-fu than me!

Thanks everyone

Is the Vega just too small? Just coming up to 2 years living on mine...:)

I had a more modern & bigger boat before but it wasn't as comfortable or practical to live on, a Jeanneau Sundream (one here), one of these more modern designs with an aft double cabin would now be available for that sort of budget, but half of the double is under the cockpit. But it won't have two full length full width settees, they'll taper at one end, not as good as the settees on the Vega. There wasn't as much storage space for clothes/food either, unless you put it in boxes & put them in one of the sleeping cabins, so I guess I'm saying be careful what you get. I do agree though that the Moody 33 is probably about as good as you could get in liveaboard terms for that budget & will take you anywhere, would definitely be on my shortlist. But I'd want a reengined one ideally...

Others might include Neptune/Neptunian, there's a couple of Finnsailer 35s for sale in UK asking £25k, can be had cheaper elsewhere though. How about this? What I do think is that there's a lot of boats that you wouldn't have been able to buy for that sort of money not very many years ago but you stand a chance of getting for around £20k now, e.g Barbicans, Contessas, Halmatics, even possibly Vancouvers, just have a look around on the boaty selling sites see what's available up to £25k. Good luck...:)

Yeah I like those aft cabins with a walkthrough as well. Some (not many) of those Moody 33s were made with a giant quarterberth instead of an aft cabin though, here...

If you want the corridor to a larger aft cabin then look for an M333- the 33S is the less common aft cockpit variant. you can look at the boat archive link on the MOA website homepage to get basic data on the models.
