Hi, my Yamaha 9.9 has today started playing up in reverse almost like it is jumping out of gear. It came with standard Yamaha lever (Morse?) control I don't know model number off hand. Push lever forward for fwd centre neutral, back for reverse, another lift up lever for idle speed which locks the gear selector in neutral. There is screw at the front which I adjusted this morning thinking it was minimum revs. adjustment. Anyone know if this could have caused the problem? I am on boat with no manuals and limited internet access. Can't remember which way I adjusted screw, would like to know whether it might have any bearing on reverse engagement. Outboard is deep in well witb access only to top and needs a hoist to lift it out.

Just a thought. Is the outboard "kicking up" when reverse is engaged rather than jumping out of gear ?

Many outboards have a locking mechanism to stop this kicking when reverse is engaged . Perhaps it is not working at the moment ?

That was my first thought but....

Motor fine all last year. Nothing done to it since other than fired up on boat on drive with water supply.

We only got the boat on the lake on Saturday, Seemec fine then and Sunday. Problem seemed to occur from when I adjusted screw on Morse.

I would like to know what that screw is supposed to do.

I've tried to find an owners manual but its difficult without model number / serial number.

I think the screw at the front of the remote control is simply the throttle friction adjustment ...

There is an adjustment nut behind the swivel bracket. you would disconnect this if you where removing the bottom half of the motor for say servicing.
Have a check that this has not slackened off and is now not allowing the gear to engage properly. you should be able to see this if you move the selector lever forward and back obviously engine off.

Thank you , the engine is in a deep tight well, so inspection probably not possible without lifting it out which is not going to happen this week.

If this is the problem don't delay fixing it longer than necessary or you may damage the dog clutch

Thanks for the input. Because the main lever is throttle and gear change combined i thought the screw related to this not the neutral speed adjustment.

As there is a Yamaha dealer near were I was I was a able tho have a look at an engine. The reverse lift lock was fine, the outboard securing bolts needed tightening, I hope they are not compressing the wood bracket.

I disengaged the fwd/reverse cable, engaged reverse using the engine mounted lever and all was well. So I adjusted the cable which seems to have rectified the fault. Unfortunately the cables are 1m long and have 2 bends at or less than the minimum recommended radius.

This.
The adjuster nut actually separated on mine many years ago. Left me with no gears/drive while manoeuvring in the Lymington trots.
