Evening All,

Recently purchased my first inflatable with Honda 15hp outboard. ( First craft, so bare with me please). I’ve had 3 successful trips so far and flushed the engine after every time. However today I’ve had a nightmare. Engine starts on first pull and idles fine and revs are high when using throttle. When I put in forward gear their isn’t enough power to get the boat to plain just enough to crawl with the front end of the boat sticking in the air. I’ve taken the prop off to check for any fishing line or corrosion but seems absolutely fine. Any advice would be much appreciated before I take it to my local marina. Thanks

Could well be firing on one cylinder only

Confirm by pulling one plug lead off at a time. If that indicates no fire on one swap the plugs over to check the plugs

Check that you can get a spark that will jump at least 9 mm from each plug lead ( best to use an adjustable gap spark tester if possible , otherwise improvise )

If sparks are good check compressions if you can steal a tester from somewhere.

Check valve clearances

Check the manual to see if it has a "limp mode"if so what will trigger it.

Wait for steve66 to come this way

When you say that there isn't "enough power", do you mean that the engine is not revving to its previous rpm or that it is revving but the revs are simply not powering the boat through the water?

The former could be many things from fuel delivery problems through to ignition problems whereas the latter is probably a slipping prop bush/cush drive/shear pin depending upon the fitment.

Cheers guys. I’ve had the carb off today to clean it. I’ll see if this improves if not it’s into the mechanic as I don’t feel confident touching anything else. Thanks again

How many have you got on the boat with you when it happens. Is it poor weight distribution?

Is the outboard perhaps not trimmed in enough, but you say you had 3 successful trips so might be the carb.
