I can't believe I am posting this and not JFM or Learner. I guess JFM is on his boat in the SoF and hasn't heard yet and he is the super yacht disaster king and Learner is in a bar somewhere ;-).

Check this out!!

Lady Moura on the rocks betweeen the Isle des lerins

"Cannes - One of the world's biggest private yachts, a 108-metre vessel belonging to Saudi billionaire Nasser Al-Rashid, sparked a beach pollution alert at the Cannes film festival on Sunday after running aground.

The luxury vessel, the Lady Moura, hit a submerged rocky outcrop near the port in this French Riviera resort as it was navigating a short distance off-shore Saturday.

Authorities closed two hotel-owned beaches hosting some of the VIP parties taking place at the festival and set up water barriers to stop leaking fuel from fouling other areas.

The yacht itself, an imposing white vessel carrying a helicopter, was pulled off the underwater hazard by a tugboat. Two big holes seen in its hull were hastily patched up.

Cannes officials said the fuel pollution was minimal and should be quickly cleared up, allowing the 15 000 festival-goers to continue with their partying and cinema dealings on one of the world's most famous coastlines.

Rashid, an advisor to the Saudi royal family and a powerful businessman, has a huge fortune whose magnitude is largely shielded from public scrutiny. He reportedly paid more than $200m for the Lady Moura, which is named after an ex-wife."

We were moored next to Lady Moura in Palma last year. It's bleedin' huge and not very pretty. British skipper and officers by the sound of the VHF traffic. I can't believe it went aground between the Iles des Lerins as it's far too shallow there to even consider taking a boat that size there. More likely it went aground between the Lerins and Cannes. There's some shallow bits there

Staggering that it went aground in its home waters though.. I guess the crew were under orders to get the boat in as close as poss during the Cannes FF.

You mean vulgar, any boat that is bigger than ours ( and at only 28ft means nearly all boats we see) we describe as vulgar /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Reason being you cant / dont want to be anywhere near Cannes at the moment !!!! She is (allegedly) off now but the things people will do to during the FF ;;; especially as where she was is the narrow shelf (possibly the only one on the CDA) ..... What is it with these mega-yachts?? Thank goodness they dont go near Cardiff Bay!!!
