How practical are a pair of 200hp Volvos for the river? Fitted to Princess 330 so I assume they will have turbos etc. Will the slow running cause problems? Can we expect big bills? :(

They'll be OK but a blast now and again at sea will be of benefit. 200hp ain't that big a deal. My last Princess had 360s and I never had any trouble.

Probably bullet proof 41s of some sort.Very nice boat,we went to look at quite a few a while ago.
Just the usual checks for neglect and lack of engine use will be main worries.10 mins WOT in Sea Reach is your only real test but a bit far to go for a sea trial.
Has the arch been modded to fold down otherwise you are limited as to your cruising or will need eventually to find about £1k to chop arch/get hinges made/ spend ages trying to find cheap rams and finally give up and buy decent ones .
Finally remember you will be paying the compulsory 5-10 % "Thames Premium" if you buy any boat on the upper Thames.Worth looking ar what they are selling for elsewhere on the coast before making an offer.

I have one 200hp Volvo with a duo prop on my boat which works fine on the river. Agree that a good blast in other waters away from the non tidal Thames is a good idea from time to time and will show up any weakness.
Condition is more important than age imho and if these engines have been neglected repairs can cost £1000's. Would recommend a full mechanical survey.
At river speeds fuel consumed is around two thirds of a gallon per hour

Our old Targa had twin ad41s 200hp each and was fine on the river but one of the issues with this engine is that they smoke alot at low revs and idle.

Chill

"they smoke a lot at low revs and idle."

Proper diesels then, none of them modern electrotriky jobs which go wrong when used near water or blow up when you try to run them on a drum of old heating oil with lumps in it.

Haven't I seen figures here somewhere that quote Volvo as saying 1 GPH at tickover and 4 GPH at 2,000 rpm per engine ?

Take a foolish man to do 2,000rpm on the Thames !

1.5 to 2 gph total consumption at around tickover would sound about right to me,especially if on (heaven forbid) outdrives.
