2009 Invitation to Ireland - UK MOBOS drink the \"Green\" stuff

In light of the red/green diesel schemes in effect from Nov 1, you are all hearby invited on cruises to the Irish coast for merryment, scenery, craic and a few fills of "green" diesel costing 80c/l at the pump or from road tankers. Kilmore Quay, Dun Laoghaire, Kinsale, Cork and even Dingle await hoards of friendly invading UK mobos - this time by invitation /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

PS: While the UK boats may be drinking the "green" stuff, skippers are welcome to drink some of the "black" stuff /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Froggie

thanks for the invite.

Do you suggest I use my new boat to fill up with green or black ?

(BTW, it's not the one that's doing all the work.....) /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

and do you notice that the little boats are making all the wash !

Looks like you'll be getting an invasion from myself and some neighbours.
Been talking about for a while, now to organise the flotilla.

How about an offshore meet to maximise the benefit?

/forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif Brilliant

Yes for visitors to the Irish Coast here's a taste of our coast line. We could send flotillas out to meet you all, carrying adequate supplies of the "black stuff". Actually I suggested a few years ago to try and get an MBM cruise to meet up on the south coast with an IWAI cruise. Probably only an option for Welsh and Bristol channel based boats, but all welcome for the "craic". Head for the scenery of the south and sw coast.

Now i feel really stupid.I was sitting here trying to think of ways to ''work around'' the problem.and it was there all the time. The beautiful emerald isle,I could well be a very frequent visitor to those shores if they will have me. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

If i ever get that Bloody boat of mine across from Germany then i think a flotilla to the Emerald Isle would be a great idea.If we get the weather this year !!.We could maybe get a discount for bulk purchase /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Ocean Froggie, wonderful log of your trip around the coast. Great reading and great pics too. That SW coast looks awe inspiring. There is something about a rugged coastline! Also thought the lock (or is it a lift) into Lough Derg looks really interesting and quite an amazing piece of engineering - how does that work. Have you gone around the other way at all (northbound)?

Re: 2009 Invitation to Ireland - UK MOBOS drink the \"Green\" stuff

Thanks Mike. Yes Ardnacrusha is a hydroelectric dam connecting the inland Shannon to the tidal Shannon just upstream of Limerick city. The drop is 102ft in two lock chambres, the first is 60ft drop, and the second is 42ft. The lock is entered under guillotine gates. The power station now only generates 2% of the national grid, but in 1939 it generated a staggering 87% of Irelands electricity. There are four turbines, but generally during summer months of low rainfall she is running one, but during winter she can run four turbines generating a 12kt flow on the Abbey river in Limerick during a spring ebb. I've been upstream with four turbines running, but never again. It's is an awsome piece of engineering built by Siemens and 5000 Irish labourers between 1925 and 1929 and even had it's own railway built for moving the earth and rock as they built the diversionary wier and 7 mile long head race canal much of which is higher than the surrounding countryside. In it's day it was the biggest engineering project in Europe between the two wars, until a little nutter with a moustache built Germany's autobahn network.

That is amazing. How long does it take to get through? 102' in just 2 chambers must be close to some world record. To put that into context the Panama Canal rises only 85' with 3 stages and the Thames rises 234' but over 45 locks! the Great Lakes system probably has a greater drop, but a few more locks.

Re: 2009 Invitation to Ireland - UK MOBOS drink the \"Green\" stuff

It takes about 50 mins to lock though. Yes somebody once told me it's the deepest lock in Europe, but I don't know for sure. I've locked down a few times in 30mins as I know the lock keeper and he can drop me down like a stone when I am single handed. There is no turbulance. I love locking through it. It's a bit like going down a mine shaft in your boat, but very slowly and quietly. Dingle can be just a days cruise from Lough Derg.
