Sorry, I know there is still a quarter of 2007 left but I am preparing the 2008 sailing programme (well dinner programme really) in my role as Hon Sec (ie not paid) of the RNSA and cannot recall if the East Forum bash to Oostend is Early or Late May BH.

Got a feeling it is late May when we usually go to Calais but I fancy something different! /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Thanks

Peter

Thanks Sailorman, generally do your own thing then, but plan a longish weekend. Is it busy in Ostend at that time of year ? do you go through the lock, or moor at the yacht club that overlooks the entrance ( the one with that helpful harbourmaster overseeing everything)?

normally a maritime festival on whole w/e
i always use the Montgomery Dock ( first stbd ) busy but almost always room 4 another boat. no pre-booking available . H.M is Robert ( God ) best there is IMHO but DONT CROSS HIM he had a good memory /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I'd like to aim for it, but as we are going thru' a cull (sorry, I mean rationalisation) at work, even if I survive it there'll be less of us to cover the rotas. Still, I've marked it in my head for reference. Of course, if I don't survive I'll be forced into looking for a better job - one that gives more time for sailing for example /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Agree with the former, not necessarily a bad thing. But can't agree with the latter.

HM is usually on end pontoon to greet you, and take your lines when you get to berth. How many HM do you know who will don a wetsuit & Mask, dive over the edge to cut away net fouling prop of visiting GB yacht. It happened when I was there in July this year.

Have used RYCO for the last 20 years, never had a problem, alway,s been welcomed and have used them for the Colne/Ostend Rally for most of that time, with anything up to 25 craft at a time. Harbourmaster is enthusiastic, helpful and obliging...in comparison to my experiences at the North Sea, where on two occasions suffered damage/ breakage to boat whilst out for meals! and HM couldn't be bothered!....Opinions are based on personal experiences, yours may be very different!

It would seem that experiences vary - we had a boat at RYCO for two months a couple of years ago. She was moved twice without me being informed and each time she was tied up badly. That was enough for me.

When you're in Ostend - with a young family - for more than 2 days, the being stuck in the middle of nowhere is not a bonus.

I'm the first to admit that the RNSYC HM is pretty much an acquired taste. He may seem a bit "brutal" and high-handed at times. OTOH I've always known him to offer advice to new arrivals as to how to tie up.
Some skippers ignore him or assure him that they'll be all right.
That's where it stops for him - it can be a lively anchorage at times and Robert's attitude is very much: If you can't stand the heat, stay out of the kitchen.

We've had our previous boat there for a year a while back, and I have nothing but praise for Robert. He's looked after us very well.
