Apologies in advance for once again seeking to pick brains, but could someone give me ideas about annual berth costs in the areas above, for a 40ft-ish yacht? (Not necessarily looking at the poshest and most expensive options, and within about an hour by car or train of the locations mentioned will do...).

Merci bien, muchas gracias, grazie mille...

You'll be lucky to find ANY moorings at any price along that stretch of coast!!! I,ve been looking for several years for a reasonable price mooring for a 35 ft yacht.
However there are some available at Port Napoleon (near Marseille ) for about 3800 Euro per year and I believe there may be some spaces in Porto Di Roma but I dont know the prices. Also Port Grimaud at 6900 Euro for 12 metre boat.
My yacht is stored out of the water in the Quo Vadis Yard in Toulon for 1700 Euro per year.

Not surprisingly Port Napoleon is FULL. They are extending the hard standing for appx 100 boats for this winter. In the water it's much more difficult. Even yearly berth holders who try and get out for a day sail find their berth occupied when they return!! Too many multihulls are adding to the problem.

Does anyone have a ray of sunshine to cast on this gloomy scene?

Not sure where you are now but I'm assuming that it's in the UK and you're thinking of coming to the Med. All I'd say is don't be put off by the totally accurate information above. We all find a place in the end. I'm sure Porto di Roma will have space (because it's rubbish crusing ground) but it's very close to Fumicino airport and great for exploring Rome. I stayed there for a year about four years back and I think it was about 3500 euros for a 37 footer. Great winter livaboard community then with about 50 boats and lots of activities.
There is quite a swell in the port sometimes so get down towards the shops at B,C or D pontoons from memory. Incidently on my website below is a picture of my boat at Porto di Roma.
best of luck

you could try Martigues dry port (Port-a -Sec) very good service bit windy and dusty, loos excellent cheap supermarket outside gates, nice venice like village short walk away. 2 good chandlers, Bernard and Fabienne are really good at finding things for you. and eating out in the village is affordable.
