Hi ,
hoping someone can shed a light on this issue . I have a 2006 Honda 5hp that has been in stored in the normal upright position for over 3 years . There is oil dripping from the exhaust port ( located below the anti cavitation plate and above the prop ) and it has been in this normal postion for over 3 years . Does anyone have an idea what might be causing this .
Thank you very much ,

Honda haven't made 2 strokes for donkeys years... It's a 4 stroke, and if it hasn't been used for 3 years, just been left standing, a seal may have hardened and let go...

As far as I know, Honda have never made a 2T outboard. So it must be sump oïl.

Old man Honda hated 2Ts, so the few that they built in the bike world were kept away from him.

It's a four stroke! I don't understand why there is any talk of 2 strokes

A suggested you need to determine if it is engine lube oil or gear oil. Engine oil is a light viscosity grade while gear oil is a much heavier viscosity grade and usually has an unpleasant "rotting cabbage" smell

Because we always ask new forumites to give as much detail as possible about their problem ...... and when discussing outboards the most fundamental issue is often whether the outboard is 4-stroke or 2-stroke. As the OP did not even provide this basic level of information, I asked the obvious question. :)

the OP said it was a 2006 Honda 5 hp.

What more do you need?

If it coming from the ex port just under the cavitaton plate, then I doubt it is gear oil

I think I agree but its difficult to understand why engine lube oil would drip from there if the engine has been simply standing upright for over 3 years.

Perhaps it was fogged before being stored. Perhaps it was transported lying down before being stored.

Not so sure that there is a seal in a position that would account for this. It would have to be a between the oil pan and the exhaust housing, below the oil level.

Perhaps the bottom crankshaft seal, the drive shaft shares the leg with the exhaust. Just odd that goes after sitting for 3 years.

I think the seal is probably raised above the standing oil level.

I'd not be panicked into to tearing anything down if its just a few drips of oil over 3 years .Different if it really is leaking oil continuously or if something becomes apparent during the re-awakening.

Its a 4 stroke!

I suppose an equally dumb question would have been to have asked if it was petrol or diesel!

My contribution in post #2 addressed all the possible issues as shown by all the subsequent posts.

Your contributions are nothing but continuing point scoring and added nothing to the problem solving.

Just what is your problem?

I wondered why there was talk of two strokes
when the OP had said what engine he was asking about in his initial post.

Not sure who has the problem here
VicS has a long track record of good advice on, among other things, outboard engines.
So your post was a bit uncalled for.

I would have wholeheartedly agreed with you until a few weeks ago. You presumably missed the thread where things got so bad that VicS went back and did the right thing and deleted his posts.

I would just like things to get back to the way they were as I don't frequent this forum to be stressed out. That's what The Lounge is for.

If VicS believes it is appropriate to belittle my mention of 2-strokes in post #2 with "I suppose an equally dumb question would have been to have asked if it was petrol or diesel" then he can always ask to debate something with me in The Lounge.
