Re: 2003 Tidal Predictions - wxtide32 prog

Have just discovered that the latest version of wxtide32 program has a v. much reduced set of UK and Scotland ports (my home port, Ullapool, has vanished). It may therefore be of little value. If I find a fix I will let you know !

Re: 2003 Tidal Predictions - wxtide32 prog

The latest version of WXTide had to have the UK ports removed due to pressure from the UK Hyd. Office. The previous version had them all. So don't make the mistake of downloading the latest version - it overwrites the previous version, and wipes the UK ports off.

I still have the previous version in Winzip format (228kb), so, it may well be illegal, but I am keeping it safe on a separate disk.

The version I have, with UK ports, is version 26. 27 is the version with UK ports removed.

regards,
Philip

The latest version of wxtide32 is 2.8. The three most recent versions (2.6, 2.7, 2.8) are all available for download from www.simtel.net, and possibly also from other shareware/freeware sites. You could try downloading both 2.6 & 2.8, and then replacing the 2.8 versions of the files 'harmonic' and 'harmonic.idx' with the 2.6 versions. That way you get the UK port data with the improved appearance of the later version. It seems OK so far, on the basis of the first two minutes of testing. A competent hacker might be able to properly merge the old data with the new, rather than simply use the old file.
Wxtide is not totally accurate, but generally good enough. For my local port, it gives times generally within 5 minutes and heights generally within 0.1m of the HO predictions, but be prepared for either to be very occasionally outside those tolerances.

Re: 2003 Tidals-Try Belfield

Peter. Have a look at http://www.belfieldsoftware.co.uk/ . I used the 02 version all this season and have recieved the 03 disc now. I found it great value as it gives most N Europe ports incl even obscure secondaries. The full rise/fall graphic display is especially helpful in doubtful situeations. It,s on offer to the en of month for £9,95 I see. Best of luck Harry

Macmillan Reeds is now available in loose leaf format, so you only have to buy the upgrade pack each year. (£16.50 for UK and Europe, £12.50 if you only need the UK). You can get it without moving your mouse too far - YBW books have it.

(To buy it to start with is £34.95 though)

I was recently given a Prosser electronic tidal calculator. It can predict tidal heights for Standard and Secondary ports throughout the UK, with the French West coast, Portugal and Gibralter also included.

I havn't used it in anger yet, but it seems that it can predict such information to infinity. You simply put in any date in the future, for any of these ports, and it tells you tidal heights at six minute intervals (you simply scroll through the clock until the time you require is displayed, and it shows the actual tide height above chart datum) It also tells you whether the tide's rising or falling.

According to the handbook, it computes this information by the 'Simple Harmonic Method' (whatever that means), but it is claimed to be accurate.

I don't know if it's still available, or what it would now cost, but on the face of it, it a great bit of kit.

Anyone out there used one of these??

Prosser tide calculator

I've got one and use it regularly. It's never been wrong so far. The user interface is a bit dated and not very intuitive but the manual is short and explains everything clearly. Did you get a manual as well?

Mine came with my boat, but when the boat goes it's staying with me.

No idea if they are still produced though, I haven't seen any Prosser stuff advertised for a while.

Re: Prosser tide calculator

Thanks,

Mine was given to me a couple of months ago - it's a few years old and is unused. It is still boxed, complete with manual, and works fine etc. (the friend who gave it to me had two, and also swears by them) I was only concerned to see if others had used them and your experience is good enough for me! As it's accurate in your view, it would certainly seem to reduce the risk of any manual miscalculataion.

Cheers
