2 Stroke Outboards subject to stricter controls .... now here\'s ...

Another thought. OK we understand the so-called logic of 2 vs 4 stroke engines and emissions - whether we agree or not is beside the point really.

BUT ... what about the Generators from another thread on here ? 2 strokes many of the smaller ones .... and getting popular ... soon every garden will have one !

Will 2 stroke legislation eventually catch up with all engines regardless of what use ? It's frightening - well it is to me !! All that oil-changing, kg's to hump around etc. etc.

Better grab what you can now before it's all legislated off the shelves ....

Now Nigel! consider yourself reprimanded in the strongest possible terms! That is blatant scaremongering, and one can only assume that you have come into a considerable number of shares in some eastern block manufacturer of two stroke electrical generation equipment?

Yours most unsincerely etc. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Is it only me, but who else is not surprised that the old eastern bloc countries feel so at home in the bureaucratic EU?

Thought it applied to all 2 Stroke engines built after a certain date.

Could be wrong!

Re: 2 Stroke Outboards subject to stricter controls .... now here\'s ...

It's a recreational craft directive, so applies to boat engines.

The emmissions regulations came in for diesel and petrol 4strokes on Jan 1st 2006, whilst 2 strokes were given and extra year, and the same regulations didn't come into effect until Jan 1st 2007

Scaremongering indeed and worse still, may seen be by some as bordering on Twaddle!
Good on ya.

Scaremongering indeed. Worse than that, it may even be seen by some amongst us as Twaddle. God forbid!

Good on ya.

Re: 2 Stroke Outboards subject to stricter controls .... now here\'s ...

The legislation is rather complex - actually new two stroke outboards aren't banned - just those that are carb fed, and don't meet emission controls. So in theory, if you could make the technology cheap enough, a direct injection low emission 2 stroke would be legal to sell. In practice, too difficult to do for a small outboard. But actually most existing ones are so simple, they could be kept going for years and years.

Re: 2 Stroke Outboards subject to stricter controls .... now here\'s ...

I made the point that 2 strokes haven't been banned and that existing ones can be used, and even dealer stocks continue to be sold, elsewhere. Though people didn't take kindly to the information.

I was careful about my post - as I know it\'s not banned ...

but subject to stricter emission control.

Scaremongering ............ What Me ?????? Now would I ever do that ????? /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Some posts mention direct injection ... now is that Direct Oil Injection as seen on some of the larger 2 st's or Direct Fuel Injection ? as per WalPhilips injection al'a Lambretta's ?

Yeh - I had a Lambretta and WalPhilips injection .... used to kick-back when starting something awful ... used to really hurt when it caught your shin !! Took it off and put on the Amal carb ....

Reason I ask ... Fuel Injection for 2 st's has been around for years ... but would it be good enough ? Probably not as I suspect ....

Re: I was careful about my post - as I know it\'s not banned ...

Not an expert - but I guess emission controls on 2T's would be aimed at reducing unburnt fuel being ejected in exhaust (and hence oily slick's in the extreme case of a seagull), and reducing the burning of the oil, to reduce particulates? I guess if a computer can control the amount of fuel oil mix (not using pre-mixed fuel/oil), and the rate of flow into the engine, you could reduce the problems. That's what the mega large complex 2T's do?

Re: 2 Stroke Outboards subject to stricter controls .... now here\'s ...

Yes, well, what about all those chain saws, leaf blowers, strimmers, hedge trimmers etc etc etc.....

See I\'m not the only one ....

I know a lad out here with one of these Guilera Moped jobs ... all regulated to 45 Km/hr ... he tinkered about and this thing flies ! He has to be careful to reset it for Technical inspection !!

But it's 2 st ... and does smoke a wee bit since tinkering ...
