Thanks Wiggo,

I've had the boat painted and i've brought a 20hp Yamaha short shaft. All I really need is the screen and a few little bits. The boat is around 10ft, I heard that this kind of boat was used for jumior f1.

Yup, boat building has always been a cottage industry and that will have been made by a small manufacturer. No possibility at all to get original parts. It's not like the auto industry. You will need to make or have someone make a windscreen from a sheet of perspex. Fittings and mechanical bits can be bought from loads of places (like www.sea-screw.co.uk to mention just one of hundreds) and may not match originals but will be perfectly ok. Best of luck

I'm new to the world of boats and wondered if anyone can give me advice with restoring this little boat, I've had it resprayed (outside and seat), its got the steering wheel, steering cables and I'm biding for a 20 hp Yamaha short shaft on ebay. I need advice on a transom plate, speed lever, paint (what kind) inside and the black rubber running around the boat.

Any Advice or help would be much appreciated.

Also could somebody take a look at the outboard and tell me if its ok

you need polycarbonate for the screen, it scratches more easily than perspex which is acrylic but you can bend poly carb cold and its easier to work. Poly carb is a bit more expensive.

The yam outboard looks about early 1980s. May well be ok, but could also be knackered. Incidentally, I'd run it on 50-1 or 75-1 oil, not the 100-1 stated on the decal.

The yam is described "short shaft" That means your boat must be 15inch from the top edge where the outboard hangs on, to the bottom of the keel. If your boat is 20inch, you need a long shaft and in that case DO NOT BUY THE YAMAHA

It is a tiller steer model. You need a remote throttle and gear levers, available from many suppliers eg www.vetus.co.uk or similar, maybe www.aquafax.co.uk (where in the country are you based?)

The tricky bit is you may need some original Yam bits to attach the remote to,at the engine end. Original parts for an early 80s should still be avaialble though. Get the serial number of the engine

So far, the above parts could be £150.

Side rubber as mentioned www.wilkes.co.uk. Could be £50 I suppose. A cheap alternative is 1 inch black rubber hose split with a stanley knife

Paint could be ordinary B&Q or more expensive epoxy stuff, but I'd use ordinary paint. Or line the inside in grey cord carpet stuck on?

You dont need a transom plate on the outside. One on the inside is useful where the engine clamp screws press on the boat. Any offcut of aluminium or s/s sheet will do. If you are gonna run the boat fast it's better to bolt the engine thru the transom, not rely just on the clamps

Nice paint. Starsky and Hutch fan?

Most boats of that type and era would have had carpet glued to the floor and sides to line out the cockpit, not paint. Often in charcoal grey colour. Suggest you do that.

I put a new screen in our Fletcher a couple of times. Easy to do. Basically a banana type shape. Mock it up in a sheet of hardboard to get a template. If the curve is a bit tight wet the hardboard so its more pliable. To cut the placcy use a jiggy saw. I got a blade from the plastics place for this. Nice neat cut. Or most plastics places will cut and finish edges for you if you give'em the template. Can go the whole hog and stiffen it with an ali frame.

Well, the one we had on had obviously been home made in GRP. Get some thinnish plastic and bend to shape round the boat, make a wooden frame to hold it in shape, and then lash in some grp. The finish wasn't good (as in smooth gelcoat), but it had been overpainted with hammerite, and looked great. The whole thing was pop riveted on.
