Water heating and generator questions

Hi all, our Trader 47 is still having remedial works carried out in Marseille before we can transport back to Essex.

I have a couple of questions..
1) there is a hot water tank/immersion fitted, would water in the tank also be heated by the engines when running?
2) there is an Onan gen-set. Will the engines provide 240v power when running or would the generator need to run at the same time if electric was required?

Appreciate every boat setup can be different, but wanted people's thoughts please.

I expect you will see hoses between the engine to the calorifier to heat the domestic water.
The engine will probably not provide 240V power.

Welcome to the Trader Club!

In theory, one or both of the engines should be able to heat the water in the calorifier. As MarytnG already suggested, it's unlikely you'll be able to produce 240v from either engine. That would normally only be possible if you have a 240 generator hooked up to one of the engines and that would look like an additional belt driven alternator fitted to one of them. Failing that, you could supply a useful amount of 240v from an inverter running off your batteries, but inverters are notoriously current hungry.

Our Trader 445 is all electric and we have no gas on board, so when we're away from the marina we're using the generator a lot for almost all our 240v requirements.

Still very much interested in parts once we get our boat to essex, i'm hoping we'll have it by the end of september...but who knows

3 majors bits of work being carried out are 1) engines major service, 2) replace all skin fittings, 3) remove a substantial tender crane manufactured and installed by the previous owner.

Once here the work for us starts

We were going to have the boat sailed round, but that seems quite expensive, so it's likely we'll have it shipped round. The boat is too tall for roads.

We've owned the boat for about 2 months, and not seen it as owners.

Another welcome to the Trader club. It is quite possible that your hot water is 240V heated only. That is the case with our 54. So we heat water off shore power in marinas and via the Onan genset when on moorings or at anchor.

Usually the hot water tank (calorifier on a boat) is heated either by the engine or 240v supplied by shorepower or a generator if you have one. Therefore you don’t need to run the gennie when you are running the main engines, unless you need 240v for something else like a kettle/microwave/oven. Depending on the capacity of the calorifier, you may need to top up the heat when moored. Ours cools overnight, so if you want a shower in the morning, will need to heat it again.
