As some of you know we have a bit of an issue with one of our engines at the tail end of last year. On a trip back from Chichester to our home mooring in Southampton one of the engines dropped a cylinder. We were just gettin up to speed when the port engine started to run rough so it was a slow tri home on the stbd engine.

On closer inspection we found that one of the valves on no 3 cylinder had cracked and about 1/8th of the flat of the valve had sheared off and had managed to burry itself in the piston and whack into the head.

Many hours of toil later and we have replaced the piston, liner, head and all the seals and got her running again today...yay!!!! We now just have to clean the ramaining oil up from our previously gleaming engine bay!!

Lessons learnt are as follows......
doing these jobs yourself with a little mechanical knowledge is rewarding if a little frustraiting and painfull at times.

Mercruiser dealers are as badly over priced as Volvo! ( who would have guessed they would have more than tripled the retail price that the original manufacturer charges for a head for example!!).

Hunting around to source parts and asking advice in here can save you a small fortune!!

Well all we need to do now is service the other engine, lifet her out and antifoul her bum then get on with the season!!

Look forward to seeing you all out on the water. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif
