Having recently puchased a boat with a folding 2 bade prop i have noticed the pins are erroded away on one side, they need to be replaced and i dont know the best solution, to make them or buy them.

each blade is held in by a 1/2 inch stainless pin which is in turn held in by a grub screw at each end, the grub screws are visible when the prop is viewed from astern, there is flat gearing on the ends of the blade which allows them to fold in sequence.

does anyone know the manufacturer from the description or should i just make some?

It sounds like a Volvo prop, same as mine. Try cleaning the crud off the main body and if it is Volvo it will have their name on the side. Spares should be available.

Be very cautious in unscrewing the two screws: it might happen that the head breaks away and you will have to drill through the screw with 1,5mm point. In any case, if You apply anti fouling to the prop, be sure no paint gets into the screw holes.
As the pins are in s/steel it is a littlle strange tthat they are eroded; anyway they are very simply to remake: just check any job shop which works steel parts: I had one expressly machined in no time and little expense.
They are probably available at Volvo spares centres.

The prop you describe could be from a multitude of makers, GORI or Eliche Rradice come to mind. The makers name or logo should become visible along with size pitch marks if the boss is cleaned back. The grub screws usually with allen key heads once out, should allow you to punch out the two pins. The pins could easily be made up at a marine engineers, but if you can get a makers name I bet the helpfull people at SILLETTE SONIC willbe able to help. When you reassemble the prop, coat all the pins, grub screws, cogs and blades with a water proof grease, this will help control wear, and promote smooth operation. Good luck. John.

If they are of UK origin then it's likely they will be of 316 in the softened condition - as that's the form the steel can be bought in this country. So it should be a nothing job to turn one up on a lathe. If not of UK origin I wouldn't like to comment.

Regards

Richard.
