2.5BMC starting problem

I have a 2.5BMC in an old Owens 27 which I cannot start. It had been sitting for about 6 months since it was last started and it was difficult then. Two of the high pressure injector pipes were leaking at the injectors so I had new pipes made up and had the pump reconditioned while I was at it. Is it possible to get the pump back 180deg out of time like you could with petrol engines? There is a splined spigot with a flat on it that corresponds to that in the pump and the engine drive and I assumed it would only go in one way. I am now doubting this. I have also replaced the glowplugs. There is power to them and I have a new start battery. Any ideas?

Umm, lots of possibles here, did you have the injectors overhauled at the same time as the pump? Always a good idea, when you had it running last time did it run OK, no excessive smoke or knocking etc? I'd crack the injector pipes to see if you have fuel at each one and not air. Having worked on these a long time ago I can't for the life of me remember if the diesel pump only goes back in one place!
If it's got half decent compression and some fuel it should fire up. They need full throttle and a decent blast of heater plug to get going and the plus have got to be 100%.

Whereabouts are you in Essex?

No I did not have the injectors done. Ran out of money after paying £300 to get the pump done! The engine, once fired up, did run fine. Quite sweet in fact. The plugs are new (£20 each) and I replaced the wiring while I was at it. I did bleed at the filter, then pump , then at the injector pipes. At a complete loss. I would have at least expected an attempt to fire, but nothing.

The boat is on Canvey Island (Near Southend-on-Sea)

Hiya
I love these engines. If you have fuel and a good spin over then the problem is power to the glow plugs. These sods will start if the bottoms hanging out of them and the pump is timed 180 wrong, I know, I've seen em. Wire the plugs direct for twenty seconds, squirt a little "easy start" near the air intake (only the once) and turn her over. Let me know what happens.
Cheers
Syd :)

Thanks Chaps

It needed about half a tin of easy start. I disconnected the glow plugs as it suggested on the tin. After the first squirt she did fire. Took a few more attempts to get her running after that. The following day no easy start and glowplugs reconnected and she fired up fine. Stacks of smoke but I think I have overfilled the oil. Still she's coming out of the water now that I can motor her up to the slipway, so that I can replace the transom.

Hours of fun. Who needs a family anyway?
