Hi all - had a hairy moment a few days ago, recoil starter on 2.3hp packed up whilst pushing a small yacht... managed to take it off and wrap rope around flywheel to get going. I've taken it to bits and it seems the recoil spring has jumped out of position. Any pointers for the correct reinstallation? The diagram is here http://www.marineengine.com/parts/j...urer=Evinrude&section=Recoil+Starter+Assembly but I can't find instructions anywhere - its part number 7. Thanks, Trev

The little return spring ?
I thought you meant the main recoil spring #2. Refitting those is like coaxing an escaped tiger back into its cage! New ones are supplied wound and wired up so that they can be dropped in and then released

No sorry. I let recoil spring escape once .. very carefull not to do it again

Why not ask for advice on the Evinrude/ Johnson forum at either iBoats or Marineengine.
