I have heard about the Bavaria 40 vision yacht, I am tempted to get one to play with next year in order to gain experience before sailing round the world. I would like peoples views on these boats, I have heard that they are great value for money and can take anything that is thrown at them, just what I need when alone in the South Atlantic!

Thanks in advance.

large enough to have generators, toasters, aircon and huge battery banks

small enough to be singlehanded - probably important for you.

Just spoke to the dealer, he reckons a 33 cruiser would be a good first yacht, apparently it has a bit more room inside than the racing models. The bumph is getting sent to me so some exciting times ahead planning my new venture and route around the world, Don't worry Duncan, I'll drop in and see you in the CI's on route to the BVI's /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I would take up the 'extended warranty' offer.
Does it get 5 stars in the Euro NCAP thingy?

Am I in a time warp and is it April 1st ? Or are you just bored and trying to get all the anti-Bavs into a lather ??

I saw a Bavaria in my marina yesterday, lovely and shiney white, none of that old wooden stuff, so easy to wipe clean and lighter I guess to whizz across the Atlantic, why carry excess weight when not necessary?

These boats are state of the art, have you seen the factory? each one is built just for you with great care and attention to the finest detail, well that's what the dealer said.

Don't worry, after 4 months sailing round the world I will be as fit as a butchers dog /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

A 40 will get you round the world - bit lightly built but why not.. The only question is what state will she be in after you lived in her 27/7 for 4 years plus? What will a yacht that in 4 years has had the same use as charter boat has in 8 years be like? How much will she be worth?

If you buy a more sturdy 2nd hand boat of more durable construction you should be able to sell her for what you gave for her at the end of the circumnavigation - maybe more!

I think B's are excellent value if you are just beginning and intend local sailing in the summer with 2 or 3 weeks extended cruise each year. The resale value drop is still pretty big - from what I can see on Boats for Sale section on this web site..

Are you ditching your heavy weather crew? Who is going to put your fenders out for you, and make the toast?

I hear that he likes to try and catapolt his crew from the bow onto the pontoon ... 20 mtrs is the record so far. At least that's what Keith managed at Yarmouth! :-)

Re: 1st boat advice please, is a Bavaria 40 Vision OK

You are welcome to come around if you want /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif But could you get 4 mths off work to do it? I've already done 8,000 miles down through the South Atlantic and 8,000 miles back, I would just like to continue all the way round.

I've bought a book on sailing and will read it this weekend, most of it is similar to power boating but made to look elitist IMHO, I will get an auto pilot and electric winches then I can at least have a good nights sleep /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Why do need to read a book if you have already done 16,000 miles

"I've already done 8,000 miles down through the South Atlantic and 8,000 miles back"

:-)

Best bet is to just buy it and read up on how to sail as you go... it's easy really.

Re: 1st boat advice please, is a Bavaria 40 Vision OK

Because that was on a cruise ship! /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif How the hell can I be expected to sail a boat without reading a book on it? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif
It must be different on a sail boat without the entertainment and cinema's. so more to plan for self entertainment, that is what will require most planning, nothing worse than getting bored mid South Atlantic with no pool or entertainment team to keep you going!

I have taken a week off in August, I am going to see how and if I can survive in the Solent without going into a marina for say two nights e.g. anchoring up, doing my own washing, ironing and cooking e.t.c. at least that will be a good start /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif See the plan is there, just expanding on it each day.
