I'm somehow shipping a lot of water when my engine is running. It's clean and salty....no nasty deisel or exhaust smell, nor can I see it sraying oout or even running from and obviois hose failure. Any ideas? I'd expect a spray from the stern gland, wouldn't you?
 
I think I'd have spotted it if it had been the pump, but I will check it anyway. Fortunatley there's enough water getting into the engine to keep it cool. There is no muffler (not enough room in the compartment), just the water trap and that's still "full. Thaznks for the tips....
 
Not quite sure what you mean about the stern gland - I certainly wouldnt expect any water from a modern stern gland.

The water pipes on a 1 GM are all easily visible so you should see a leak. Is the water warm or cold? If cold then its either at the engine inlet or the stern gland or some seacock etc.

But (and I'm not trying to be clever) I dont understand why you are asking us to guess when you can go and look.
 
Also I have had a leaky stern gland problem on my vessel (the same as Topcat's in case anyone wonders why this is so specific). The upper countersunk set screw which secures the stern-gland to the hull worked a littleloose after motoring - very little loose, so it was subtle. Engine was properly aligned etc. This was enough to admit water. It's incredibly difficult to get to. I'd tighten, it would loosen , I'd tighten, it would loosen. You get the picture. And there isn't enough space on the 'land' above the gland to get a lock nut in. I tried circlips, everything. Eventually I bought a bronze overlength bolt which was soft enough to allow me to bend it a smidge after I'd bolted it up. Now it's locked.
 
I've been all round the boat and there's no sign of a weep from any of the seacocks. The only other source of water is the engine and the deep sea seal (which is new).

When the old seal failed, the water ingress was evident from the path it left in the bilge under the engine. The bilge pump was leaking over the seal so I couldn't check this at the time. It's not leaking just now (the seal that is, the pump's in my shed in bits)

Feeling all the engine hoses, they were dry, with no visible leaks from the joins, so I wondered where else to look.....

The water appears to enter when under power I'm struggling to think where else to look, hence the post.....

I'm going to check the waterpump today.
 
If it happens only under load I would guess it is the deep sea seal. May not be evident when not under load. The prop shaft moves forward when powered up, sometimes allowing water past the seals if they are not lined up quite right.

Do you have a flexible coupling as well, as some give even more fore and aft movement.
 
I'd say its the Deep Sea Seal, aggrovated by worn engine mounts. I nearly sank the boat in the Hamble river like this:

Accelerate and the thrust from the prop moves the engine forward, Hey Presto! the seal parts! I'd have thought the 1GM10 being a single cylinder, wobbles all over the place.

Fitted new mounts and junked the seal for an old fashioned stuffing box. Ok they dribble, but they don't fail catastrophically like patent seals can.
 
I'd more or less come to that conclusion. I just wondered how to determine the state of the engine mountings. They "look" fine and the rubber is still stuck to the metal.

Maybe I'd better try that Yanmar help place....
