Our water pump on our 1GM10 leaked and we had some minor corrosion on the oil pipes. I took them home and painted them. The corrosion was superficial. I bought new copper washers and fitted the pipes back to the engine. One of the banjo fittings leaks and despite numerous attempts I can't get it to stop completely. At one point it nearly stopped so I tightened a little further, which made it leak more! grrr (wish I'd left it).

Does anyone know if there is a torque setting for these banjo fittings? I'm concerned about stripping the thread in the block of the engine.

The leak is probably a small cupful after 5 hours running; so not desperately bad; but messy.

Thanks

Geoff

Where the washers sit is there any damage or marks to the block or the banjo fitting?
if alls good they should seal fine and as you say you don't want to strip the threads by overtightening.
you could try annealing the washers if they are not soft enough.

Should not leak at all. Suggest take it off again, clean the faces and use another set of new washers. No danger of stripping the thread, it goes into cast iron.

Thanks.
As far as I know there doesn't appear to be any damage to the block, so most likely I somehow managed to get some crud trapped in there. 3 out of 4 of the joins don't leak and I did this successfully before a few years ago when we had a similar issue, so I a little surprised to have this issue.

Do the washers need to be Yanmar parts or would any copper washer of the correct dimension suit? I can probably source these is a local car shop for pennies. I also have the original old ones at home with me so I could anneal these too if necessary.

It's very important to replace the copper washers. The old ones get hard and don't seal so well as I found to my cost! If the water pump is leaking you also nede to replace the rubber seal(s). I had the same problem some years ago. The same applies of you disturb anything on the fuel side - new copper washers every time. I bought a box of 100 from Halfords for about £8.
