Trying to fix a 94 Cobra SX sterndrive. 5.0 motor with 1.66 gear ratio. Put the boat in forward it works just fine. Put it in Reverse it locks up and the motor is instantly stopped. removed the Sterndrive and opened the cover for the shift shoe and all the gears look great. Shift shoe looks pitted and worn pretty bad. I was thinking that might be the issue along with shift cable but some input would be greatly appreciated. Could the cone be engaging forward and reverse when shifting into reverse? locking up all the gears in the upper? Some insight on how the cone clutch works would be greatly appreciated.
