I need to source a new spark plug and lead for the above engine. I have found the right plug on e bay but am having difficulty with the plug lead. It is only about 4 inches long with the plug cover on one end and an unidentified fitting at the other. Can anyone advise please?

Correct plug is a Champion RL87YC. That is a surprise I would have expected an NGK plug, BPR6(or 7)HS or something like that.

The plug lead wire should be copper cored but it appears to be integral with the ignition coil which is now shown as an obsolete part!

Thanks very much very helpful. I will just replace the plug for now and maybe get a new plug cap for the old lead. Will visit the lawnmower man tomorrow as I guess he will sell the bits!

I've occasionally seem systems where the plug cap, HT cable, and coil pack as moulded as one piece. If the existing cap is damaged it will be possible to cut it off and fix on a new one provided you have enough cable as you suggest.

If the cable is damaged then replacing it will be more tricky. I've never seen such a thing as an HT cable joiner but such things may exist. Provided it's copper cored as Vic says I don't see why you couldn't cut back the insulation, twist the cores together and then bind the repair with PVC or self-amalgamating tape. However, I've never done this.

Check the cable conductor carefully when you fit the plug cap. If it's carbon cored then do not cut it off near the coil as you will not be able to repair it without a specialised connector of some kind.
