1975 Broom 30 Advise Please

Good morning,

We're in the process of purchasing a 1975 Broom 30 single helm hard top. The boat has been somewhat neglected in recent years and will need all the windows to be removed and refurbed as they all leak. Also, the wooden panelwork surrounding the windows need replacing or some may need refurbing if possible. The panels particularly in the wheel house are totally shot.

Also, the hard top is fitted with a Webasto pull back sunroof which to my mind is also a source for water ingress.

I would appreciate any advise (obviously not the "dont buy it type") from anyone with experience of Broom 30's. The price will obviously be reflective of the above mentioned but we just wanted feedback from people who have had previous experience.

I just sold our 1976 Broom 30, it was a lovely boat!

The Windows are a source of problem, ours were removed and refitted by Brooms at huge cost a few years before we bought her, so no leaks, but the wood had been affected, most was fine, a few hidden bits a bit shonky.

I had a couple of small weeps appear, but Capt Tolleys creeping crack cure sorted those.

The Webasto roof didn't leak at all, as it's fitted onto a raised platform. We had a cover which popped over the sliding section when not in use, it clipped onto the rails a few inches either side of the sun roof fitment area. It also protected the cover, which was perfect at ten years old.

I would recommend a twin helm model mind you, and stick to single engine unless you really need two, as the single is just as fast, and less problem with prop damage or getting stuff caught up! It's not that quiet inside either...

Yes echo NR above. Fantastic solid boats with the best accomodation around in 30'. Window sealing just has to be done despite the expense otherwise it will get worse and be an ongoing cause of anxiety. My wheelhouse hatch has a simple cover with press studs. Never have used the boat with it open.
The ply inside is what they call 'tiger stripe' which I sourced from Robbins Timber in Bristol to replace a couple of water damaged panels.
Have had no other problems.
Mine is a late 1980's just as Broom were starting winding up the 30 and made to a special order with twin BMC Mermaids.
Noise in the wheelhouse under way is an issue it has to be said, twins more so of course. I have never driven inside but always without exception use upper helm
either with canopy up or down. They are the most sought after but cost more as a result.
I would find it difficult to go back to inside only steering now on any boat, if only for the view.
Nevertheless you will be hard pressed to find a boat with a better pedigree and quality of build. The Hull layup by Aquafibre is heavy and mine has just a few isolated osmosis pimples. Apart from window leakage, which you will get with any boat over time, I cannot identify any other generic issues with the 30. They are popular boat and hold or even increase in value if looked after. All the best with your new purchase.

Thanks to both of you with your advise. We've been quoted to take every window out and have them refurbed, but, as for the wooden panelling we dont know yet. The fore and aft cabin I think we will be able to rub down and try to salvage that way cause they are not too far gone. The wheel house however is another issue. The panels (or quarter panel) that butt upm against the rear window are shot completely and the windscreen surround on starboard side has gone too.

With regards noise, there is a double layered insulated wooden floor that has previosuly been installed and when we went out for a river trial the engine noise is really very minimal, in fact we were really surprises how quiet it was.

Survey is on Friday so a clearer picture will become visible.

I too am thinking of buying a Broom 30 - have looked at a few and as you mention window leaks seem in evidence on some boats I've seen. Can yo ugive me a rough idea of what it costs for a window removal, refurb and refit?
